Was over at the dump shop the other day and picked up a Linn Karik III cd player and a Majik amplifier for $5, the Karik has a mechanism problem in that it will not eject a cd but otherwise works ok.
The belts are fine and the 2 dc motors work fine, it all appears to be caused by the little motor that brings the laser up into position: it will work going up but not going down. Any Linn experts out there?.

Edit: Ok the fault does appear to be in the driver circuitry for the motor that jacks the laser into position, if I power the motor independently of the circuitry, the tray will go in and out as normal and load/play CD's, so I have a small
region of circuitry to troubleshoot now.

IF I get this sorted out I'll have a pretty good sound system for the shed for under $200 with the homemade valve amp and the $1 Technics SL1300 turntable.

Ok it's fixed: it took a few hours of hand tracing and sketching the schematic, helped by Linn using normal "off the shelf" components with readily accessible data sheets. There are four slotted sensors, two for the tray in and out and two for the laser carriage up and down jacking motor. A faulty H22A1 slotted sensor for the tray "out" position was the problem as it is tied into the carriage jacking motor circuit. I did kill a couple of carriage up/down motor transistors in the process but have a couple of substitutes soldered in for now.

Yes!!!, I think this CD player sold for around 1500 UK Pounds when it first came out, so it should make a nice shed player now. Bryan Ferry never sounded so good.:2tsup:
