This is 1/2 the pile. Free except for the sweat. The rounds are maybe 45-60cm thick.
Actually, just some of the firewood behind the diamond willow wood shop.
Not a saw log by any stretch of the imagination, really bad Douglas-fir.
Nice color bands though. Pseudotsuga menziesii var. purecrap.
Next week, I'll help break it down for the winter wood stove.
There was BIG snow up top behind me last week but the WX has been so
nice (22C) all gone for a little while.

Looks like you live in a beautiful area there Robson, I'm envious. How much firewood would you go through a season? I just calculated we've gone through about 3 tonne this season. Haven't lit the fire for a week or so now. I'd imagine you'd go through a bit more firewood.

sjt: Thanks. Moving away from the city and settling in this little village (550) was a good thing to do.

I run a Harman P38+ compressed wood pellet stove in the winter. Burn about 5 tons (10,000lbs) per winter.
I still use the original oil-fired central heating furnace in spring and fall. The Harman saves me more than $1,500
per year in heating costs. Took only 3 winters to pay for it. We get lots of -10C to -25C and winter storms with 70+kph wind.

Those winter storms commonly cut off all electricity as well. I have a solar/photovoltaic set-up that can drive my Harman (500W AC)
for about 8 hours. I have sucked that system dry 3 times. As a note added in proof, the girls in the local grocery store quit counting after SIXTY power outages in one day. They have a $3k back-up system that the cash registers run on.

The diamond willow wood shop will burn maybe 5-6 cords (4' x 4' x 8'). You see, there are no other wood carvers in McBride. The only place to talk wood, finishing, glue and so on is after beer o'clock in the DW shop. So, I work to help to get the fire wood ready. I have never had a profound or satisfying dialogue with the cat.

Nice scenery behind you there Robson!:)

I'm interested in how the wood burns.

It's nice to put a face to the name. Glad I'm not chopping that pile up!

Won't be too tricky: splitting maul, some wedges and a couple of 6-8lb hammers to break the rounds in half.
Breaking each half into thirds is far easier.
The fun part is the gas-engine driven, hydraulic wood splitter.
Noisy but you don't have to bust a gut.

I've been out chasing wood, grinding sand, pyrite crystals and slate.
More today, I hope. Taking pictures.
Lots of trees coloring up but 2 more weeks and
the place will look as good as the Ovens Valley/Vic. in autumn.
Always was a treat to drive out to Mt.Beauty.
Is the pub still there in Porepunkah?
