View Full Version : Hard to find imperial oil seal for ELLIOTT MT 48/4000 Lathe

Hi Gang,

I have posted previously regarding my Elliott lathe and I need some help tracking down an imperial oil seal.
I need to source a 3.35 OD X 2.28 ID R4 imperial oil seal. I did manage to get a 3.35 X 2.25 but it was not a metal case which at the time I didn't think it mattered but I forget it needed to pass over a Circlip groove which did shave some of the OD. And yes it leaked, not sure if it leaked on the OD or ID, real pain as the 5 belt drive pulley that runs in the seal is a real pain to remove and replace. So
If I can get the 3.35x2.25 in metal case will the difference in the ID cause problems, will it distort and leak, maybe split on the ID, in metric it is about a .8 mm difference.
Advice from the gene pool please.
Cheers Bruce

0.8mm (actually 0.77mm) is quite a bit undersize. Maybe a 58x85? What width is this seal?

Hi Nev,
Width is .5, 1/2 inch, will the under size be out of spec.

Thanks for that, looks like the 58 85.25 13 should be ideal, its interesting that at both bearing seal places I went to neither could find a compatible size.

Do you know if 58 85.25 13 would be a available size.

Not spotted a 85.25 OD anywhere yet. The 58x85x13 (or12mm) seem to be quite common. Here's a couple.

Metric Oil Seal 55mm-64mm Internal Diameter at Rocket Seals (http://www.rocketseals.com/catalog/o-rings-and-seals-for-metric-measurements/metric-oil-seals-style-mos/metric-oil-seal-55mm-64mm-internal-diameter?page=8)

Lip design is different. One seems to have a dust seal the other has not.

Size looks ok, at 58 85 13 but I do need it in metal outside due to the circlip groove it has to pass over.

So far 2 bearing/seal suppliers have told me that all seals now days are rubber only on the out side, both have inquired with their suppliers for overseas supply of metal outside old stock but once again they are saying not available. OK so what do you do if you need to install a seal past a circlip groove.

I see plenty of seals available with metal outer. Just not the size you need yet.

Depends on who their suppliers are....

Have not yet seen a CR seal with rubber covering (not that I have seen a lot of CR seals though).... I think National are the same.... NAK are all rubber exterior though..

BCS or BSC in Wellington Rd contacted their supplier of CR seals and apparently there are no old stock in the US. Bearing Wholesalers in Bayswater think one of their suppliers may be able to source from Europe.
So what do you do if you need to install past a circlip groove if all that is available is rubber exterior????

There's a common front wheel hub seal that is available in a 62x85x10. Any way you can add a sleeve to make up for the larger ID?

Can you fill the circlip groove with silastic or putty till you have the seal in place?

One thing you could try is bedding the seal in with a little gasket goo - if the outer has been cut such that it doesn't seal properly then the goo will take up the slack.

A chamfer on the inner edge of the circlip groove??

Bearing wholsales in Bayswater are going to get 1 sent from Singapore, 58 85 8, the difference in width should only be to the caseing and not the rubber seal its self.
I had considered most of the options that everyone is putting up, if the metal outside seal does not turn up I will try taking the sharp edges off the circlip groove and then when I have installed the seal run a bead of blue oil resistant silicone.
Thanks for everyones input.
Cheers
