On the weekend, purely out of interest, I attended the Melbourne Society of Model and Experimental Engineers biannual exhibition and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Thought I'd share a few of the images I took.

Bright Mens Shed Community Project CNC Wood Router. If you saw this for yourself you'd be amazed at the level of engineering in this project. A credit to John McNamara and Leo Solsoy who designed, engineered and built this CNC. I'm very tempted to follow in their path with this project.

Some nice pics there and interesting video in the other post.

I bought Don Taylor and his tethered car to the show on Saturday (64 years old 1 carefull owner) and had a great time poking around for 6 hours. Don had a great time catching up with some of his friends that he only sees at the show, and prowling through all the other displays.

We hope to get the little car running this year to get some video and pics of it doing its stuff. It is nearly ready to go now, we replaced the front tyres for the show as the originals had perished to a couple of blobs of soft rubber. Original tyres were from a control line plane that Don crashed in 1948, replacements are from one he crashed in 49, same size and profile, so car is still in near original condition. Next thing is to check my stock of Diesel fuel on one of my Tiapans, and if it's OK then give the ED in the car a couple of runs to sort it. Otherwise back to finding chemicals and brewing some fuel for it.

Motor is in good condition for a 64 yo, with more than 300 hours run time and a few good plane crashes on it, so we don't anticipate problems with it. Don built the car as a second year apprentice in 1948. Motor cost 8 pound back then (about 5 months apprentice wages), chassis is plywood, body handformed ali sheet and brass for the grille. Don made a flywheel and centrifical clutch for the car, and the rear wheels and drive train are Meccano. Car is started by running the flywheel over the hand cranked rear wheel of an inverted push bike, and then held down at the start, slipping the clutch. When released the car accelerates, spinning the rear wheels for about 3metres and reaches terminal speed in a couple of laps. Times out to 32MPH (52KPH) average over 8 laps.

Other cars of the time that Don operated with were generally imported complete from the US and could run to 100MPH with much more power. They were direct drive petrol units started by pushing with a forked stick stradling the rear axle. Once the engine caught, the cars took off and the starter had to clear the track swiftly.

Hi Scott,
Thoroughly enjoyed our day. such an array of Men & their Machines.
Thought the Chap that had The Tank + the V8 Motor was very Impressive.
The couple of Men that the Plastic build up machines was also very good.
Looked around for you.

Scott

Yeah, looked around for you as well. I 'think' I saw you across the room early in the piece, you were hooking the plane on the roof? By the time I got there, you were gone.

Yeah, that tank was superb however I thought the CNC build was great. If your going to the Woodwork show, maybe we can catch up then.

Scott what an Ornamental Turners/ Machine Engine Turners dream.

Why do I know the name Garry Sneezby? EDITED 1247HRS ...:B:doh: Garry Sneezby "The Eccentric Engineer" ex-member of OTGA Ornamental turning and curiosities (http://www.eccentricengineering.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=16&Itemid=6)

I wonder if they have contacted Society Of Ornamental Turners?

I appears small enough for a watchmaker to do engine turning or jeweler. Or what they call Horology.
