View Full Version : Mortise in a turned bed leg

Hi there mates can anyone give some advise on how to start with my bed project, i need to turn a bed leg with a mortise on two sides for my front and side rails.I was thinking to fisrt make the mortise and then do the turning. Pls advise238971238972

Yes mortice first while the leg is square. However those joints look like the whole rail goes in the slot so the tennons have no shoulders. I suspect there is some kind of hardware fastening in there.

:whs: Much easier to do the mortises while the block is square rather than after the turning.

Make the mortice while it's square, the 'infill' with something soft and a tack of glue to hold in order to make turning easier.

Turning with an open mortice will prove ...interesting and somewhat exciting.

I would make the rails with overlapping finger joints (total of 4 fingers at each), intersecting within the mortises. Lock all together with a metal bar from below.
