Was rough-turned green and I forgot to write the species on it  Most likely Box Elder.

20 cm x 7.5 cm. Finished with n/c sanding sealer and wax.239873239874

Looks nice .Hard to tell what it is. I have found that box elder has a strange "off" sort of smell when turrning it.

I agree, a beautiful shape, the side picture really sets it, almost translucent to look at.

Well done.

Thanks for the feedback.

It has an incredible range of variation in the grain, from bark inclusions to burl eyes, voids and these unusual fine stripes running up the side. Refining the inside was a bit of a trial.

Ted, this didn't particularly smell but it may have when it was green turned. Was a while ago.

Hi Ern,
Lovely work as usual, Ern.
It looks extremely like a piece of Red Alder I gave to you a long while back! It was not so much a burl as a bit with lots of epicormic feature in it. I wish I had more of it.
Attached is a bowl and a vase I made from it. From memory it didn't distort a lot when turned green. The vase was never trued up on the lathe when dry.

Fine looking bowl Ern with a great piece of timber, don't see much Box Elder up this ways. :2tsup:

hughie it's ideal 'demonstrator wood' if the ID is right. Lots around Canberra and you see Raffan going through it at Wood shows.

But I think Steck is on the money. Looks very similar esp. those swirls of fine stripes. Thanks again! Can see why you wish you had more.
