Always liked wooden columns myself, followed by sandstone, marble and granite. Don't go much on concrete.

Tea lady,
Hears some pics of two of my lathes, I have three. They aren't very god ones but I will take some tonight so that you get a better idea.
My main lathe is one of a kind manufactured for a Uni engineer project (Atkinson) its 360 over the bed and 4.5m between centres.
The second lathe was made at the BHP. I modified it to be a free end turning lathe with variable speed from 0-4500pm. Can turn 2.2Dia x unlimited.

Great looking lathes. I see you have a Wadkin free standing tool rest. We (as in me and ) have two of those now. :cool:
