Look for the book Rivers of Home by Marion Nixon and have a read before you do your planning. Jandamurra's War is also a decent watch for a bit of history.

More details on the book here:

We spent a couple of years up there and found that typically from about April to October was a good time to venture through the area.
Once the wet season is over it is more comfortable for folk visiting ,the roads are more easily navigable unless you like the challenges that confront you during the wet season .I liked the wet season as the country became seemingly more alive with the freshness that came during that time.

If you want to get to the really remote regions then seriously consider the time frame mentioned.
There was many an occasion that we had to winch bogged vehicles out because people came unprepared for the challenges that the country came up with during the wet season.

Cheers:)
