suitable surplus source for right angle worm drive gear box ?- power hacksaw

G'Day,

My Dad has a small power hacksaw which uses normal 10" hacksaw baldes - I was thinking about building one myself based on his unit, but using 12" blades.

I was looking at various designs around, and the gearing down requires a lot of realestate to cater for belts and pulleys - so I was toying with utilising a worm drive to reduce the speed and footprint.

Is anyone aware of a common source of right angle worm drive gearboxes which could handle up to 1 HP (or 800W)? I know I've seen them in bigger industrial applications, but was hoping maybe there is a more domestic use for them which I can then troll the tips, curbside collections, wreckers etc to find one. I was hoping maybe there is a car, washing machine, common device which uses such a gearbox as a component...

Some enterprising souls have used truck brake adjusters.

You might try using the head from a suitably large angle grinder.

That will gear down the input substantially and give you 90 degree drive.

You don't actually need worm drive.

You may be interested in this type,I'm in the middle of building it from only stuff I have lying around, including an .6HP motor off an old pump
I have the plans on my computer if needed, its said to be very accurate though I've yet to find that out.

Thanks for the reminder on the truck slack adjuster - I recall reading that thread and I couldn't remember where - but I did recall seeing something "surplus" which could be turned into a gearbox.

If anyone else has suggestions please sing out, but in the meanwhile I've rang the truck brake places around the nearrest town, and lef tmy details in case a slack adjuster and S-cam become available. - I'll keep my eyes open for other options as well.

Tongleh got so much out of this forum with all the knowledge and advice as well as the part for the cold saw, not sure what happened there.
Hopefully he will have a think about it and contact the mods to become a member here once again.

I have a washing machine gearbox I was going to use for mine - before I bought my Royco. It came from an older top loader and has a rotary input and a reciprocating output at a substantial reduction. Don't recall the numbers but will dig it out later and take a pic. Youtube has a few washing machine derived hacksaws.

Edit: That's not strictly true. The output is still rotary but oscillates back and forth.

Also, look out for a busted rotary hoe. These have a beefy worm drive.
