Saw Crack

With all this vice talk I was inspired to dig the old carter out of the rubble in the shed. Picked it up at the local markets a couple of years ago and after dismantling and removing the gummed up grease it seems to be in good condition. Straight, no obvious wear or mistreatment so probably not out of a school, but I can’t seem to get the quick release to work. The mechanism works but the block doesn't seem to drop far enough away from the screw. I’m sure I can fix it if I can just stop the kids from trying to help, but does anyone have one that does work and can advise?
