I like the bowl, but I think the lid dominates too much. I think something smaller would be nicer (and lighter in color).

The dome is too high. If you can get the lid either to the height of the "points" or the dips it will look a lot better.

Make a couple out of some cheap stuff like pine and just compare.

The finial also needs to be thinner with a bit more definition.

I'll add a second vote for 's comments.I'd also like to add that you've done very well in centering the grain rings evenly in the bowl section, they do look good.

I don't mind the lid, it loosely follows the line of the bowl. A photo from a lower level might show that better. I do agree that the finial needs to be finer and be better defined. Still a nice job.

Great turning, especially on the bowl!!:2tsup::2tsup::2tsup:

I too think the lid overpowers the overall piece for reasons stated by others.

Skew ChiDAMN!!

What Powderpost said: I think that with a finer finial it'd improve the overall 'balance' quite a bit. (Finials are a skill in and of themselves. :sigh:)

Nice work!

Bowl and lid are fine although the lid may not be a complete curve, the finial is its let down, have a look at Cindy Drozda's site. Cindy Drozda - The Fine Art of Woodturning - Artwork, Instruction and DVDs (http://www.cindydrozda.com/)

What Hughie said. The finial, if finer and with a Cindy Drozda type shape, would allow your eyes to be drawn down to the lid and base, without dominating.

I would be inclined to make the lid finish a little lower as well, as stated by .

What a great effort though:)

Let me "knee-jerk" this thing. No brain at all (as usual).

The lid thing seems all out of character with the elegance of the visibly grained bowl. Get rid of the lid. Make/turn a compatable lid, possibly a contrasting wood.
The real hell of it is, for me, is that you did such a stunning job of the dish, the top is going to have to be an essential part of the opus.
