As some of you would know I have bought a new car and camper (see here: http://www.woodworkforums.com/f119/my-new-set-up-163591/) and intend travelling around Australia visiting various Forumites and woodworking get togethers. This is the first trip, down to Melbourne and back over 3-4 months, to test the set-up and iron out any issues (the first being a big one see: http://www.woodworkforums.com/f119/all-packed-not-ready-go-165722/) that I will address whilst down in Melbourne.

Anyway, I am on my way. First night I stayed with FiremanSam (Andrew) at Coffs Harbour and the lat 2 nights at Nabiac ( near Taree) with my cousin. Tried to visit Peter at Artisans Retreat, but my cousin had a few problems that needed help, so sorry Peter :- perhaps on the way back.

Next stop Clarence Town for the Hunter get together, then to Katoomba for that get together, then probably now Kiama or something around there before staying at Bega for a while with lifetime friends.

Then to Melbourne for 4 weeks, and 's demo day, before heading back via Wagga Wagga for the Turnout. Then back to the coast to do the site seeing I was supposed to do on the way down. Sorry guys out west :-

I will keep posting updates here when I can, but if any Forumites want to meet up please PM me.

Cheers

Bet the steering was light with that rear load. Drive carefully, it's the idiots coming towards you on the wrong side of the road that cause the damage. Be patient!

And use the GPS to negotiate your way through unknown towns. I find it especially useful for alerting you to ever changing speed limits that the local constabularylike to use as revenue raisers , esp near the end of their budget period. I got picked up 3 times in one day between Perth and Albany with hidden speed cameras at the bottom of a steep hill, and motor cycle cop hiding behind a billboard, etc, so I now watch the speedo when slowing down coming in to new towns - it is impossible to judge speed otherwise.

I'm with Dengue, stay safe! Great looking setup though, I'm a tad green with envy. Happy trails :)

So its started eh.

Neil whats the yellow/orange thing hanging down under the trailer front right corner? The road dips in NSW will soon take care of that.

I am not sure if the law's in NSW have changed but the ladder type thing hanging off the outside of the trailer is No No I believe. Possible hook up hazard for pedestrians and motor bike riders. On top no problem.

Have a safe trip and most of all enjoy.

Well left Nabiac yesterday, but had to back track to Taree to get a new jack. I jacked up the car, trailer off, to take off the rear wheel to take photos for the Lazy Xale manufacturer. The sisser jack, rated to 1.8t, but it just bend in half. The axle is probably at 2.1t when the camper is set-up whilst the car is stopped, so it should have been able to take it. Mind you, I think 1.8 on a sisser jack is dreaming. Managed to get a 2t trolley jack from Repco on special for $98 :2tsup:.

Anyway, found my way to Clarence Town and stayed with WoodNut (Paul) overnight. We have the get together today here so looking forward to it. The chairs are all pressure cleaned ready

That is the old canvas cover to a 4x4 1t jack I use to lift logs (doesn't suit new car). Since the photo I have wrapped a bungie around it to keep the canvas up. I also have aluminium ramps stored under the trailer. They are all held up on aluminium security door mesh bent into U shapes.

Hmm, I wasn't aware. It is my milling ladder hence why the rungs aren't even. It doesn't protrude past the trailer, except by 150mm at rear, so I hadn't worried about it.

Caught up with Neil at Tele Point - after his GPS sent him up the bush - haha
Great to meet and chat for a while, even though we didn't have a lot of time.
Putting a face to a log-in name on the forum is always delightful.
They are never what you expect when you meet for the first time.
Hope Neil didn't have to take too many anti-depressants after the experience.
Anyway. he has a great rig and will have a few stories to tell when this epic is over.
Onya Neil!
Cheers

Yep, great day at WoodNut's place, will post photos in that event's thread when I get time to upload the photos.

I am currently parked outside NZ Carver's place, heading up to Katoomba first thing tomorrow. Did a bit of panel beating flaring out the trailer's mud guards, the return edge was touching the outside of the tyres when going over decent bumps (even after losing 50kgs from off loading the extra lathe).

The car is travelling well.

Cheers

Let us know when you are travelling North.

Well today I headed up the mountain to the Forum BBQ at Katoomba. I was going to stay there overnight and do some sight seeing, but it started raining with hail lightning etc etc just after the BBQ finished. So just headed off again. The highway back to Canberra was blocked due to an accident, so the decision which way I was going (via Canberra or Coast) was made for me. I ended up at Kiama staying at a Caravan Park overnight.

Tomorrow heading south again along the coast. If any Forumites want to meet up with me, send me a PM ASAP with your phone/contact details and perhaps we can meet up.

Let us know when you are travelling North.

If nothing changes, I will be heading your way on way back from Darwin late this year, I also plan to be at Proccy this year.

The rain continued, although just light showers, so pushed on all the way to Bega. No point stopping for sight seeing in this weather, but I know this neck of the woods pretty well.

I will be here based in Bega for a week.

Yep  No stabilizing gear though, it goes off slowly in temps above 24C, so would be off before I got there.

Left Bega this morning heading south. My mate has been working all the time and got sucked in to playing lawn bowls all weekend to fill in for someone, so the wood collecting and slabbing went out the window :~. Not that I was keeping any, but it would have been fun. Did a bit of surf and river fishing but caught zip . It has been great weather at least, although the storm clouds moved in last night, another good reason to head off a bit early.

Was going to stop at Lakes Entrance but decided to keep going. Currently at Bainsdale for a refresher nap then continuing a bit further. Should be in Melbourne tomorrow so I can start organising fine details for the car modifications.

Cheers

Avery

There are nowhere near enough photos in this thread!

You know the rules.

I have been posting pics of people in the Woodies Events threads. Apart from them, broke my camera at Forum BBQ :~, so no more until I get another one in Melb.

Yes mate. The car is being modified ata place out near Robbos, so I will be dropping it off on the 20th then staying at his place until BBQ on weekend. Because the car mods will take entire time I'm in Melb :-, once back at mum's (train from 's), I'll be relying on her car for day visits when available.

Bon Voyage Neil
I would imagine having to do semi major surgery in an unfamiliar town would have tested the best of us. I am sure you have done the right thing with the extra axle. You now have piece of mind that, with the weight of your home-away-from-home, you can have a much more easy time to travel and enjoy it.
Please be sure to give us a run down of how it travels now compared to what it was.

dai sensei

Got to Wagga Wagga today and it travelled well. The only issue is that it took an extra 2 litres per 100km more than the average travelling down from Qld. Yeh I know it was down hill :U. Seriously though, I did feel this section of the Hume did seem up hill most of the way, that would explain it. I can't believe the extra axle would make that much difference. The camper is sitting around 50mm higher now due to the increased support, so that might play a minor role also.

I did take a photo of the submarine at Holbrook when I stopped for a brake. The camera is in the car and I'm too tired to get it, I'll post it later when I get time.

You have increased your unsprung weight (??kg) and with the additional drag of another 2 tyres it would alter you fuel usage.

What were getting per 100km before?

Last time (1990) I played with a lazy axel it increase the fuel consumption by 15%. We the rebuilt it as a full 6wd and impoved it by 20%.
What tyre pressures are you running and have you tried over inflating the back 2, this may help a little.

Tis another option, but no doubt beyond my financial budget, the lazy axle cleaned me out. I think the load I am now putting on the ball may also have something to do with fuel, I wasn't too careful packing assuming no problems with loads, although that may be another story shortly :-

What tyre pressures are you running and have you tried over inflating the back 2, this may help a little.:whs:

I know from my own car (around 2.3T when loaded for holidays) that running the tyres close to the tyre manufacturer's max pressure gives much better fuel economy compared to running tyres at the vehicle manufacturer's recommendation.

So have you increased the tyre pressures? and if so has the fuel consumption gone down?

By the way, with the lazy axle fitted your combination looks a lot more steerable.

dai sensei
22nd March 2013, 11:37 AM
I haven't played with the air in the tyres (but I will), although the fuel has come down by 0.5 l/100Km, so I conclude slopes played a role. I haven't noticed any difference in the steering, but the rig just looks better to me the way it sits, the mass weight beyond the axle always worried me.

I am currently resting under a shady camphor laurel tree next to the river at Stroud where I stayed last night. Heading up the hills today into the national forest, so I guess I can expect the fuel consumption to go up again. Going to call in to Gloucester to do some shopping on the way.

I love this area and my mother tells me I should as it is in my blood. My great grandfather was a ship builder and his timber cutters cleared Stroud/Gloucester/Taree areas, and beyond, then the cleared areas became farms and towns.

I actually got to test the 4x4 through around 15 creeks :2tsup:. The timber in the trailer may not be as dry as it was, one ford was ~400 deep (max at one point) and pretty fast flowing where it had blown out during the recent flood. I even walked it first to ensure Ok as road was closed, but with lugging 5.5t there was no problem.

Current too strong to go fishing off the rocks at Tuncurry, need to wait for the tide to turn. I was actually booked in to go fishing on a boat today, but the group on the boat pulled out so it was cancelled, lucky though as it is a rough as guts.

So I went for a walk down to the breakwater this morning. Took some photomontage shots of the beach and the entrance looking in. Also caught a glimpse of a dolphin playing/fishing near the pool net.

After a huge Easter lunch with heaps of rellies, I headed off Tapin Tops around 5:30pm. I ended up staying at Wingham last night, with a zillion bats, as I was too tired to go to Dingo Tops where I had planned to stay. So this morning headed off to Ellenborough Falls to start with. I could only manage the lookout, plus the walk down to the top of the falls, no hope of reaching the bottom (200m down and 641 steps). I took a panorama of the waterfall top, then a series of panoramas of the falls from the lookout, to form a panorama of the panoramas (33 photos in all) for the final photo attached. Not bad for a phone :U

I am now at Dingo Flats camping ground (last photo single shot), stopped under the California Redwoods (Sequoias), should be a nice cool night at this elevation. I also stopped at the Blue Knob lookout, spectacular 360 degree views of the distant ranges, but not really worth taking a photo as very misty. On a clear day you can see all the way to the coast. Again I couldn't climb the lookout, aluminium ladder up, but got a decent view from the surrounding rocks.

Off to Coorabakh National Park tomorrow, before heading back to Nabiac/Tuncurry again.

I have been doing a lot of driving today. Started up the mountains from Coopernook today, going up from one side only to find the road closed and barricaded off at Starrs Creek, only 5kms from my destination of Flat Rock lookout (~50kms in). I was going to do the whole loop, but as it was closed, had to head back down to Moorland and head up the other way. It too had a sign saying closed, but no barricade, so kept going and made it to Flat Rock lookout. I will call in on Waitui Falls on way back.

Photos - cave next to the road, not sure if it was the Newbys Cave or not. Then a single shot of the escarpment at Flat Rock, around 300m straight down. The panarmics of Flat Rock Lookout, Newbys lookout and Vincents Lookout. In Vincents you can see, blowing it up hopefully anyway, the Manning River delta in the left hand corner.

still checking out the trees ? Always :U

Well yesterday I went fishing, and although the sea was quite reasonable, the rain came down in buckets nearly all day long. Trawling was no good, but finally convinced skipper to go bottom fishing, unaffected by rain. Managed to catch 8 flathead of which only 2 were keepers. Sorry, not worth photo, even the keepers were relatively small but tasted good that night for tea :U

I then got a number of calls from the neighbours at home, problems with the pool pump that was annoying them with noise, I could hear the screeching over the phone. House sitters were not there but they did manage to get there to turn it off. My guess is it is either gravel in the impeller or a bearing has given up. If they took it to the pool shop they would have said new pump required and $800 thank you. So decided to head home early.

I will catch the Bird Tree, Waterfall Way and the other sites I wanted to see some other time. Got to Woolgoolga, where the camper is made, to get some proper hold down brackets and leg side extensions just before he closed (early for weekend). Got some tea at Grafton and currently stopped for the night between Grafton and Ballina at a road side stop. I will arrive home again tomorrow around lunch time, so trip 1 is coming to an end :(.

Car is travelling well and the load is staying put :2tsup:.

7th April 2013, 11:21 PM
Got home Sat, but just chilled out at home. Today I installed the new tie-downs and unpacked a bit from the camper before working on the pool stuff. It was the bearings, but unfortunately the cast aluminium housing holding the bearings is also badly corroded and falling apart, so new pump it is. The element for the salt chlorinator is also shot so there goes some more $'s.

Anyway, I did pump up the tyres to max whilst on the highway, slightly less whilst on the dirt roads in the ranges. I ended up with 14.0 litres/100km average, and that was including dragging the trailer up the Glouster Tops and Barrington Tops, so thought it was Ok considering the total load was 5.5t. All up only 1.1 litres/100km extra over the Qld to Melb trip. It will be interesting to see the new average travelling back down again later in the year.

With all the rain Qld has had since I left, on top of what we got before I left, the surfaces inside are starting to get a bit mouldy and I have a lot of cleaning to do :~. I have to finish the car (side rails etc), then make a few mods to the camper, plus build the new carport. I still have to mill up the 7 trees I left at Rosebank.

So back home and reality setting in fast :C

Shame to read that your pool problems cutting the trip short. I know there are a million and one pool pump places around but don't forget IPP are just off Ashmore Rd. Never bought pump or pump parts off them but they used to be very good for filters and other bits and pieces.

A couple of photos I forgot. One is Tuncurry House, the house my great grandfather built and was the family home whilst in Tuncurry, now privately owned. It is declared by the National Trust and used to be open to the public a couple of times a year. It used to be located at the Tuncurry end of the Tuncurry/Forster bridge, next to what is now a B&B (also built my my GGF), but now relocated out the back of Tuncurry near the swamp.

The other is my GGF's original farm house located at Krambach. Unfortunately left to the elements and falling to bits. A few people were considering restoring it until a couple of cows got caught inside the house and died, now soaked into the floorboards :C, plus home for many snakes. Behind it is also a large Lebanese Cedar planted by my GGF when the rainforest was first cleared.
