Water Scene Crafted With Grain

I was passing by Berry yesterday and ended up browsing the markets. I was on the lookout for some tools when I spotted this. It immediately grabbed my attention. The SWMBO was very impressed as well. I picked it up for the paltry sum of $10. I think it's worth 10 times that to be honest.

On the back there is a keyhole for mounting to the wall and in black marker written, 'By unknown in Latvia?'. It measures 440x215.

I've never seen artwork made like this. It appears to be very thin laminate pieces fitted to create the scene. Am I off the mark here? What can you gents tell me about this style?

That's a fine piece of "marquetry." Old image style popularized in Europe a long time ago. Google 'marquetry' and Select 'Images'. Read wikipedia, also.
I have several examples from mid-18thC Poland which I'll never part with.
There's enough color variations in western red cedar that an artist here in my village uses nothing but WRC for stunning images. Somebody bought his blanket chest, with images inside and out, for $5K. Cheap at that price for the work.

Yep, good use of the natural colour & grain to create a nice piece of marquetry. Have a look on the Marquetry forum for some more examples.
