Dear Friends,

I want to make a Queen size bed. A platform bed with the legs inset from the edges. I have made a design which I am attaching here. Anyone has any comment on the design and more importantly whether the timber sizes would be strong enough for a queen bed. I plan to put a bed head too later. I plan to use NG Rosewood. 258879

I appreciate all comments and it will help me a lot.

Thank you
Ranga

A queen sized bed is what - 5' wide.

Your bearers are inset to take the legs, you don't say how far but looks around 9", so you have a 3' 6" span without support for 10mm MDF or Plywood - I reckon it will bow very quickly.

You certainly need a centrally running bearer.

Thank you so much. What if I use slats like normal beds which uses 20mm thick x 100mm wide pine planks. Will I need a middle bearer still ? Ideally I would like just two bearers. Thanks in advance for your advice.

I would say yes, you will still need a central bearer.

Any weight will eventually cause the boards or slats bow downwards, this will cause the bed to dip in the middle, great if you like to sleep close together as it will cause you to roll together.
