I am seeking information from turners who use vacuum chuck systems. primarily, about the vacuum source itself. vacuum cleaner motor? air compressor/vacuum pump? Vacuum generator (runs on compressed air)? air-conditioning unit? other?

Hi Jeff,Whilst not being an authority on vacuum chucks those that I have encountered who do use them,do so with an old vacuum cleaner being most likely the most practicle and cheapest method employed.

A vacuum cleaner is more than enough for a vacuum chuck. If you require info on a chuck contact Vic Wood. [email protected] He has one of the best chucks and setups on the market. Will fit to just about any lathe and if not I think they will make it fit anyway.

I have a vacuum chuck I bought from Vic. Absolutely brilliant. I have a Bosch industrial type vac. I got out of the Melb. Trading Post, together they work perfectly. Because of the suction which is stronger than the average household vac, I bored a couple of holes in the pipe in order to let some air in and stop thin walled bowls from turning inside out !I cover these with a bit of gaffer tape when using the vac for cleaning up. If you use an ordinary vac most of them have a vent to let some air in to ensure that the motor does'nt burn out. (Golden Rule:- Always turn off the lathe before turning off the vacuum source !!) http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/redface.gif

I have been using a vacuum system for about a year.I have some pictures of it on my web page. If you would like to see them, go to .. http://www.bowlturner.com
Look under lathes and tools. If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me.

Thanks for all the info. I got a good laugh out of the golden rule. We only learn one way right?! Dave, I had seen your site and the vacuum system...very impressive. I have pretty much decided to copy your chucks. I have an old shop vac that I will mount outside the building and insulate to reduce the noise. Jeff
