We camped at Grannys Flat, about 10km out of Jamieson, arrived on Thursday and took a drive to Woods Point on Friday.

We had briefly visited Woods Point last year after doing Moonlight Spur and Ryan Spur tracks but didn't have enough time to have a good look around.

You could easily spend a few days in and around this little town and we only scratched the surface in the few hours we were here.

First stop was the old mine tunnel that served as a fire refuge in the 1939 Black Friday bush fires.

Was quite interesting to see the tree roots coming down the rock face.

Wherever you look there interesting vistas in this place.

No report on Woods Point can be complete without a photo (or two) of Australia's most photographed petrol station (no longer functional).

Below the main road in the valley of the Goulburn River there is a very interesting area with lots of old mining relics on display, as well as an interesting Community Garden area.

Great photos ..... I have never been there, I googled ... But I have been to Warburton and Donna Buang

...

The 'seats' or 'thrones' at the end of the long table look interesting ... I wonder what the story is behind them.

cool bananas ... greg

Looks great Fred, love the photos :2tsup:

So next time I visit DJ, looks like I just keep driving to get there. I bet the collectors are lining up for the pumps and signs on that servo.

Yep, it's only about 95km but allow about 2hrs to get there.

Fred, thanks for bringing back heaps of good memories.:2tsup:
I used to spend many of my school holidays in that area, around Matlock and a tiny little place called Violet Town, (not the well-known one, the one I'm referring to probably doesn't exist on maps any more), gold panning etc with the old man.
Woods Point doesn't look to have changed much in the 40 odd years since I was last there.

Edit: I take it back, Violet Town does still exist on the maps - took some finding though.

Yes, it is at

37' 40.548S 146' 18.878E according to the Hema High Country West Map I have in OziExplorer

Probably easiest to get to through Walhalla coming up.

We used to go down through Matlock etc. Not sure why, we lived in the suburbs.
Our camping spot was near the corner of Jasper Creek track and Violet Town track. Even back then, it was pretty hard to get to. They're not marked on the map, but there are a couple of fair-sized mines in there and the remains of a stamping battery, but pretty steep country, very narrow, overgrown tracks and near impossible to get to.
Again, thanks for the memories.

For those that remember Roy Lyons from TV in the 60's, he had a shack down in Violet Town and used to use it as a getaway (for drinking binges, from memory).

No worries Steve:2tsup:

Next time we camp in that area I'll take a drive down to Violet Town, we normally camp at either Grannys Flat, 10km out of Jamieson on the Licola Rd, or Skipworth Reserve on the Woods Point Road.

Might camp at Snakes Reserve and be a bit closer to this area.

It'd be interesting to hear if you can get down there. We could never get a car in, didn't have a 4-wheel drive. We made sort of flat-topped buggy, with a Victa 125cc engine geared way down, driving through an old Austin A40 diff. Geared for about walking pace - it's very steep country.

If you don't mind a bit of wallowing through scrub etc, there's some really interesting historic stuff, though. It would still be the same, it's too far off the beaten track for most people.

I forgot to add - take a gold pan.
