Kiln fumigated

I have some 90x90x1200 meranti (I think) that has kiln fumigated timber stamped on the ends. It was given to me a few years ago by a neighber.
Can anyshed any light on what it would have been fumigated for and what with? Some pieces have quite a strong chemical smell to it .

Some of the so called soft woods are fumigated or imunised to stop fungal attack and insects.

Hi Tim,
the stamp in question may be an indication of Immunisation as per Tony's post,generally the stamp states the Treatment Level,as in Meranti generally a "H1" Level being a hazard level indicator which is for Timber application of Internal above ground use and the stamp may also included the liscence number of the treatment plant or facility.The chemical usually used as in Meranti commonly from Malaysia is a Boron treatment which will only penetrate the Sapwood which generally in Meranti is the lighter colour wood.The Sapwood is the part that the bugs love(lyctid borers mainly) as it contains starch,or sugar type compounds.
If any concerns re-wood dust ,wear an appropriate mask .Boron as a impregnation in Timber at H1 levels is quite safe.
