Does anyone know of a good quality honing guide i could use for the really wide Japanese plane blades. About 70mm.

The only guide I've come across that handles blades that wide would be on this (http://svc010.bne011i.server-web.com/catalogue/carbatec2/cache/header-532public__0-0.html?cache=no) page (Japanese Sharpening Jig), and if price is any guide to quality then it must be outstanding. There's meant to be a new version of the veritas guide in the works but I don't know if it will handle wider blades than the current model (63.5mm).

Thought I better just check how wide my Eclipse 38 guide goes and found it stretches to about 73mm, but it requires a straight sided blade to clamp onto and I've never tried to clamp anything thicker than a stanley plane blade in it. These work OK (on thin blades at least) and the copies (like the Timbecon MJ-817) are cheaper than the original Eclipse.

Have a look HERE (http://www.fine-tools.com/G303540.htm) @ Richard Kell's WIDE honing guide!

I've bought the narrower version & will end up buying a WIDE one as well.
The guide gives EXCELLENT results. You can read my review on the smaller version HERE. (http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=15800)
