View Full Version : Change gear storage suggestions needed

First of all, I'd like to apportion the blame for this situation to Simon. I had made a set of metric change gears for my lathe and had made up a little rack for them. It lives in a cabinet drawer and everything was fine.

However, as part of making up a hob I needed to make up a pair of change gears. As we all know, change gears are like a box of chocolates - it's really hard to stop at just two. With most things shedish, having an incomplete set is a bit of an anathema too. It is likely that I'll end up making a set of them on the off chance that I have to cut some of the less common threads somewhere between 1tpi and 308tpi (apparently the lathe can cut those, although what a 308tpi thread goes on...).
The manual says there are 36 gears in total, all 16DP and range from 30t to 73t. These are 1/2" thick, so a stack would be 18" high, 18kg and (roughly) range from 50mm diameter to 120mm. But - I'm running out of cupboard & drawer space - so I was thinking of wall mounting them on pegs with perhaps a glass or plastic cover to keep the rust fairies at bay (although that might have the consequence of turning them into a yart work). I already have something similar looking that looks like one of those dart board cupboards that I use for my files to hang in - referred to of course as a filing cabinet.

Anyone done anything similar? Thoughts? Other ideas? Phone numbers for Shedaholics anonymous?

Brian - yes, longer term plan. (But not helping now!)

Interesting idea Harty - I started kicking around a few other orientations after I posted and wondered whether anyone did something like that. More to think about.

It's not just me then....

Old filing cabinets? These can be found for nothing if you happen to be kerbside shopping, I have picked up a few over the years. The inside of the drawers can be readily modded for a variety of uses.

Toss them in a box in the drawer ?

That's all I do.

I don't like having tools on peg boards or gear sets out in the open, just a dust and (then) rust trap.

Gears are better off tucked away in a nice wooden box with a spray of oil.

You often see gear sets pyramid style on a peg in adds on Ebay but they are invariably rusty.

They're also not something you want to use everyday, so I see the box idea as the best solution.

Nothing really special but this is how I store mine.

The plastic trays come from Trade Tools Direct www.tradetools.com.au (http://www.tradetools.com.au) Product link here: https://www.tradetools.com/products/A1001E

and cost about $12 a set to pretty much fill a toolbox drawer. They have a longer tray in the kit which is much more useful

and I bought a few of these kits and have quite a few of the small trays left over.

Well, looks like it's show us your drawer time, so here's mine.

Gears back left :)

Ha!

Hey Michael, here's a quick history lesson from another thread:

That looks a darn nice fixer-upper Simon. 1.5kW three phase means you can run it on a VFD. Would run coolant too. Go for it!

Michael

I should be making you a gear storage box like Harty's.... :U
My biggest fear is that your shed will be filled with specialised tools for repairing a Heska 260! :o

Mine are stored on the shelf in the lathe cupboard in zip lock plastic bags. There not that many of them and when I take one out I just put the other one back in it's bag. For the smaller ones I have several in the same bag.Keeping them in the bags saves rust as this time of year my machine tools look like they are coated in milk in the mornings until the water evaporates out of the oil.Dave
