Watch this, it's impressive. I really love the huge machines, but it makes me sad at just how little love goes into it.

A Child's Wooden Bowl - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBTqkVdE7Jk)

It's confusing for me. I want to see the wood preserved, but this is only one way to really get it out there to consumers....it's terrible that they sell for only $20

Everything is so cheap in the USA (as in inexpensive and 1/3rd the price of here)

The youtube link you gave points to mobile phone version which doesn't play nice with a real computer browser :)

Not something I would want to do. This mill does keep a bunch of people employed.

If a person is going to make a living turning, selling reasonably priced bowls to ordinary people, one has to make a bunch of bowls or handles, or whatever every week.

In order to do that a bunch of jigs, fixtures, and templates gets you more pieces per day.

One of my turning heroes, Rude Osolnik taught at Berea College in Kentucky, USA. He would get up before dawn, knock out a bunch of turnings, go teach woodworking, come home turn some more. His wife would do the finishing and packing.

As far as I know he did not use templates or jigs for his bowls. I have never seen two alike. He made a ton of candlesticks, he may have used a profile to check the angles, but I think he turned everything freehand.

I used to buy his bowls for wedding gifts for $12, $15, $18. I did not keep one for myself. This is what the bowls sell for today:

We are 'baby-sitting' at the moment and all the family have breakfast bowls by Robin Wood.
They really are hand-crafted.
