Triton TRA001

Interested if others have had this issue with the TRA001 router in table mode (or other routers for that matter). When using the router in this mode there have been cases where the router bit has suddenly
raised itself from the collet and provided a step change in the work piece. I've gone back and checked that the piece is still tight but have had to loosen and retight the router
bit and repeat the operation on a new workpiece.


Interested on how i can avoid this from happening again and hence avoid destroying my workpieces....

Which collet does the router have. The old crappy style or the newer good one?
This has been done to death on this forum.

Yeah I've got the old one, assume the new one doesn't have this problem.
I suppose Carbatec is the best place to source a new one?

I think you may be out of luck with Carba-Tec. Others on the forum have not been able to source the chuck and collets in Aus. If you read the link I provided, you will see a link to a site in the UK for purchasing the chuck and collets.

The Gifkin as wesmeyer said is the one that fixed that problem for me,I only had slip on the 1/4 inch bits,no problems with 1/2 inch.
An easy fix,some have had problems changeing over to the new Triton one!

You do not say whether you were using a quarter inch or half inch bit.

I have had the slippage with 1/2" cutters albeit when using the large panel raising cutter (79mm).
Cutters with smaller diameter cutting sizes would usually be OK.
I am just perplexed that Triton ever let this collet be used on what I deem to be reasonably good quality routers. I have all 3 sizes and they all have the new collets now.
I think it is a matter of safety as well as quality. I have ruined quite a few panels (It takes a lot of work to get flat 16mm thick panels made of beech) before getting the new collet. These new collets are as good as the one that my Festool router has.
I have noticed Carba-Tec selling the MOF001 router with the old style collet - beats me. Triton company should wake up.

I have recently completed this whole procedure for my table mounted tra001. The thread that Les just posted is the one i put all of my findings in.

I no longer have to wonder "cr@p where did i put that 1/4" adapter collet" as now its the size of my normal collet and store them all in one place :U

More a benefit for me than anyone else, i just feel safer using it now. for a while there when my new collets were in the mail i just stopped using the router.

Well looking into this collet predicament as I have a 2 year old (approx) TRA001, I think I will just go ahead and buy a musclechuck for the Triton.
It will be available very shortly.
I'll grab the 8mm, 12mm and ¼" reducers when they come.
Shall solver all probs:D

Had a look at the musclechuck website. Unless you are removing the complete chuck, and fit a totally new chuck - not just a collet, then it is back to square one. The unclear photos looks like the chuck fits the new style of Triton chuck. If they have one for the old style, it defeats the purpose as the old style chuck is pretty crappy.
But, lets wait and see what it really is. I am always careful of websites that that do not have clear photos.
On the photo below, this chuck will NOT fit the old style Triton chuck, but only the newer one. No point then is it?

I was getting a bit kerfuddled about the old and newer TRA's.
I, apparently have the newer TRA001 collet which is OK...apparently

Yes you are correct.
If I were you, I would not bother with the new fandangled muscular thingy.
Just purchase 8mm, 12mm and 6mm collets from the UK then all sizes are covered. You already have 1/2" (12.7mm) and 1/4" (6.35mm) collets. These do not slip. Something else that these other add on chucks will introduce is vibration and extra runout.
