Spanish wines

Hi there! what u think: are the spanish red/white wines (rioja, ribera del duero...) better than some good French ones or it is just a matter of marketing? I tried last weekend a Don Faustino and it was simply great, better than some "good" French or Italian red ones. thanks

Well, I'm not sure - you may well be right. They've been doing it for a while. When I was there (about 25 years ago) we were buying Vinya Nostra for about $1 a litre (BYO bottle and all that), and for the dough it was pretty easy down the neck. Actually it was good with things besides bread.

Haven't had any of the more elite Spanish wines, but I have a mate who lives in Barcelona, and he no complain. We've had a few Chileans and Argentineans which were pretty good. They were softer reds like Malbec and Merlot.

But having said that, they aren't wines that grab me to the point where I must have more. No particular geographical differences that one sometimes notices (and I love that - NZ whites for example).

Wasn't it about 35 years ago that Spanish wines were being sold through "party plans", kind of like Tupperware or Avon

I hope that doesn't happen again.

They were really awful, really really awful, and that was when BenEan moselle was popular and the cool people (like me) drank Cinzano.

hi! thanks a lot for your welcoming words and ur answer. yes, indeed, u re right, it is not a matter of geography but quality, but at the same time it is really difficult not to speak about French wines, Spanish wines, Italian wines... btw, i prefer the Chilean wines rather than the Argentinean ones, but it is only an opinion :-), tx again

hi avery! thanks for your answer. yes, but there are high and low quality wines everywhere. i have to say there are some excellent Spanish wines also (red and above all white ones)

The only English wine I've had was home made lettuce wine (I kid you not), and whilst it did a number on the neurones, it had that disticntly unpleasant sound of a cat chorus when opened. It only got worse from there.

I took a liking to Spanish and Portuguese wines a few years ago when I was there. Last year I found this Spanish wine on sale https://www.vintagecellars.com.au/Red%20Wine/aradon-rioja-750ml-2011_6096614 for peanuts and have been enjoying it immensely. I'd happily buy more at the list price.

hi! yes, a Rioja red wine, without a doubt the best ones in Spain along with Ribera del duero's white ones

Thought this stuff was amazing - the people that worked in the bar said it was just a slightly better than average local plonk.

An excellent wine, especially if you accompany it with a good steak.

The best wine in the world is the wine you enjoy the most. It doesn't matter where it's grown. There's plenty of bad wine in France, but with something like 30,000 wineries there's plenty of gold too. I had some absolute paint stripper in Spain and some angels's tears :shrug:

The best bottle's always the next bottle. :U
