Adhesive or Velcro backed discs?

G'day All,

I'm looking at getting a combination 12" disc and belt sanding machine. It seems that from everywhere I look that after the initial adhesive backed disc has had its day, the only option I've seen so far is to replace it with an adhesive backed velcro pad and then replace your discs with velcro backed discs. The only place I've found so far that can supply adhesive backed 12" discs is in the UK, but I'd rather support an Aussie company if possible.
Taking to a rep for Jet at the Canberra WW and with my companion for the day Steve (Hermit), the consensus is that velcro is not the best option if you want a perfectly flat and consistent sanding surface.
I thought that this would be the best place to have my queries sorted.

This is something that we are thinking of stocking in the near future. What grades of discs at 305 mm diameter would you be wanting? What would you be sanding with the discs?

I bought a Woodfast 12" Disc Sander from Hare & Forbes upon recommendation of a few WWF members and have been very happy with it.
made the purchase on one of there sale long weekends and saved 10% on the advertised price.
I have changed out the adhesive backed sanding disc for a Velcro system which I bought from Hare & Forbes at the time I purchased the sander.
I've also purchased from "The Sandpaper Man" as one of the WWF sponsors and had good product & service from them.

On my wish list for your site would be 305mm Velcro disks in 80 and 120.

I made my own 305mm disk for the lathe using 18mm ply and a Velcro backing pad with a sticky back. While I have two of those, one spare, it would be cool to have those on the site too.

Also, about to buy a few long lengths of cloth paper for my new-second-hand drum sander. Exciting!

I have a Jet combination belt/disc sander and have been unable to sauce PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive) sanding discs in OZ. They are readily available on US websites. Try Woodcraft or Peachtree.
I don't want to change to a Velcro backed system because then you lose the hard flat surface that produces a better finish.

why not buy regular paper or cloth back discs (or 12" wide strips) and use a can of spray adhesive (contact cement) to attach them?

I have considered spray adhesive, but was concerned about how difficult it may be to then remove the suckers and then clean the glue off the disc. The PSA discs just pull off and press a new one on. No cleaning of old glue required. Much easier.
I have just recently ordered 8 discs off Ebay from the States for US$28 including delivery.

Spray PSA is easy peasy to remove.The glue cleans up with turps (3M brand PSA does, anyway).

spray adhesive (at least the 3M variety) is just PSA adhesive in a can

spray onto one surface if you want to be able to separate later, spray on both if you want a more permanent bond

Hi Crowie,

I initially was going with that same disc sander, but after a bit of severe head scratching, I ended up going with their disc/belt linishing sander. I wasn't going to settle for anything less than a 12" disc, so after sourcing just about every dealer I could find, I decided to go with the 12" disc and 6" belt combo. So now it's just a waiting game until they get new stock in which should be at the end of the month.....this one I hope.:roll:
