Life Size - you got any idea how big a real cannon is?

I recall a recent trip to the Fremantle Maritime Museum where they have a Dutch East Indies cannon from the wrecked Batavia found at WA's Abrolhos Islands.

In short the fircken things huge! :oo: :o

You will need to turn a whole tree trunk - on a lathe the size of... well a double decker bus!

one iron cannon of 3,310 pounds and one metal (i.e., bronze) cannon of 3,300 pounds (Roeper 1993: 219).

Dimensions: L. 3.20 m; bore diam. 0.151 m.

Good luck with this! :)

You could try a scale model or ornamental canon and scale it back up.

I also think there should be plans for turned brass canons on the net if you google them.

not a problem I say lol now were to get a blue print to get the scale right?cannons come in a large number of sizes -- ones that come readily to mind are
36 pounder
24 pounder
18 pounder
12 pounder
9 pounder
6 pounder
3 pounder
all of which, I believe, refer to the weight of the cannon ball
further differentiation comes from the type of carriage used
and then there's carronades which look like a cannon but technically are not

and then this beast

The Tsar Cannon (http://www.woodworkforums.com/wiki/Tsar_Cannon), the largest howitzer (http://www.woodworkforums.com/wiki/Howitzer) ever made,

and then the more modern varieties which typically are sized by the diametre of the bore

Unless the client is a militery buff and really knows his cannon then you could just wing it. They come in all sort of shapes anyhow. Study a few picks for inspiration. If he wants life size you may need to turn 2 half barrels joined with a tennon. The bore should not need to be deeper than required to get the ''look'' of a cannon. Black paint will hide the join. Sounds like a good project so we will need to see pics when you get started.

John

I looked at that site yesterday Joez but didn't see the drawing. Nice find.
My brother in law had a HJ 1 tonner ute with wooden side boards. I always wanted to make some replica cannons and cut gun ports in the side boards. :pirate2:

This is starting to sound pretty funny!
In fact you could make up some hilarious cannons that looked real, for instance mount a replica painted timber one of one of those huge horwitzas on the back of the HJ ute. It'd be sure to leave a trail of traffic accidents in its wake just driving around! BUT, aint there some law about replica firearms and the brandishing thereof?

I was thinking of automating the whole setup. You pull up at the lights, the gun ports open and you run out the guns , ready to fire a broadside.
Sorry about the hijack Dave. :B

Make sure to run a jolly roger flag up the HJ ute aerial, if your going to start launching broad sides at the lights! :D :D (Ohh and avoid Yeppoon if you happen to drive a Torana).

NZ, have a look for Stafford Wheel and Carridge on the net. Jeff makes new ones and restores cannons so should have some on his site. I was lucky enough to get a personal tour of his factory last time I was in the US and he is a top bloke, so he would more than likely help you. Its no good making a cannon without the carridge, so looking forward to some photos of the WIP.

Australian Toymaker volume 2 has a project on this by Bob Allison. Not quite full size but just scale it up. It explains how to turn the barrel, make the wheels and carriage, trunions and bearings. A 4 page spread with material list, all you need.
