Andy,

Welcome to wood turning. Check out your local library to see what they have in the craft/hobbies section and if you can get hold of a couple of books about wood turning written by Keith Rowley "A Foundation Course" and "Wood Turning Projects." Keith covers the basics of safety and skills very well. Another source I would recomend since you have internet access is contact the South Auckland Woodturners Guild for a copy of their "Beginners Guide" Tips & Jigs | South Auckland Woodturners Guild Inc. (http://www.sawg.org.nz/tipsnjigs/)

Try and locate a wood turning club close by see if you can become a member as it will help you along and hopefully assist you to avoid making the common mistakes. Australian Wood Review - Clubs (http://woodreview.com.au/clubs/) & VWA Resources: Club Listing (http://www.vwa.org.au/resources/clubs/) will help you find some.

Hope you enjoy turning

There are some vids worth watching in the 'Videos' section, under 'Woodturning'.
I'm in the same position as you - first lathe arriving today or tomorrow.
I joined the Shoalhaven Woodcraft Society for expert local advice/tips, but I've also been watching as many videos as possible.
Good range on YouTube as well.

For the safety side, you could watch these (http://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/safety-videos-161992/) videos created by . They are just at the top of this forum.
As has been said earlier, youtube is a great source of videos on all sorts of woodturning. Just search for the likes of bowl turning, pen turning etc. There are hundreds of them.

You didn't mention tools, so I'll assume that you have them, but before getting started, you must have a full face clear shield. Please don't try any turning without that.

As has been said join a club if you can the members will be only too happy to show you the basics and most clubs only charge a small fee for young members. I have a copy of the south Auckland clubs book I lend to new members well worth the $20 they all so have some great projects on there web site. enjoy your turning get that face shield and also a dust mask of some kind.

Ha. I'm exactly opposite - lathe and face shield arrived today, but no chisels yet..... :(

Do get that face shield - as beginners we have to expect the occasional UFO and don't want it in the face.

Edit: I just bought a cheapie - this one: https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/W102
