Great review Brendan. After seeing the video a couple of days ago I ordered a 3/8 inch bowl gouge from them and it should be in the po box today :)

I would recommend looking at the tools from Gary Pye at Currumbin, I've bought his midi set (about 50$) and a set of 3 double ended interchangeable bowl gouges ( about 130$) inc a handle.

VERY impressed by them, as good as or maybe a little better than the Sorby/Hamlet tools I bought in the UK!

woodturner 101 - it looks as if we live near each other, i definitely recommend a visit to Gary Pyes for anything turning or pens related!

Regards,
Cam

I will confess that all I really know about the different turning tool metals is how to grind them. I do prefer to buy from the person who actually makes the tools, where here (US) would be Thompson and D Way. With some of the more fancy metals, they do hold a working edge longer. This mostly means that you can do more roughing with them before the smoke alarm wants to go off. I still prefer a freshly sharpened tool for the finish cut, no matter which metal I am using.

For some reason he has two web addresses, this is the more useful one:
