Can someone shed light on the standard for external stairs? According to AS1657 stair treads should have a minimum overlap of 10mm. My friend a builder tells me that this doesn't apply to external stairs. Allan Staines in "How to Build a Deck" makes no reference to such an overlap. Also is there a requirement to have a maximum opening between the treads, so that children cant fall through on an angle between the treads.

If anyone can clear this up for me that would be great.

Cheers

max gap for internal stairs or hand rails etc is 125mm, this should apply out side as well.

I think Gaza is refering to the overhang of the tread over the riser .... I will check with the BCA tomorrow at work and let you know. I don't think I have a copyof the AS but I will check.

I think the 10 mm overlap is refering to stairs with riser boards
