Open spirals in Camphor Laurel, very darn fragile so it took awhile to get this one finished. 10" or 25cm x 4" or 10cm
local dimension 250mm x 100mm :U the usual WOP finish, satin in this case.

There is nothing like pushing yourself especially if this is the end result. Great piece:2tsup::2tsup:.

I will not say that I want to try this as I am half way through a pair of candlesticks with opposing spirals in them will get them finished after christmas if they turn out half as good I will be pleased

If that doesn't take a Blue ribbon in a contest somewhere, nothing will!

Better find yourself a competition somewhere and enter it

You could try The Royal Easter Show

This is certainly something for the rest of us to aspire to achieve. Any chance that you could share your technique with us?
Congratulations - beautiful work.

Thanks for all the very positive comments. As to how etc theres some info on my Facebook page The Wooden Potter, see the link in my signature.

Hmm, going one better might be a challenge :) was planning another one. But not so flimsy, but the blank is looking a bit dodgy, you need a sound blank no cracks or 1/2 litre of CA :D

My work won't allow acess to facebook so if you could post some details on here it would be appreciated. I don't can't want to make one I'm just curious as to how its done. Thanks

Do you want to know just how Hughie got the result?
He has a colony of military trained termites that will only eat timber where requested :U

But seriously though......you show great skill with your vessels, Well done. It gives the rest of us the realisation that we have to lift our game

Just a question......how many hours went into hollow form? (Just curios)

Not sure as I had alot of interruptions over several weeks, dunno maybe 3 days all told. As to how, its done with the "Spanish Systema" most of us are familiar with it I suspect.
But just in case you not, here it is:- mark out in pencil, cut along the lines with what ever you have. Did I say gently? must be gentle. File out gaps and sand, sand, sand, sand.

That is absolutely spectacular Hughie - congratulations on
getting such a superb result.

Now all I have to do is find a round blank with big slits and
I can try making one.

Outstanding in every way.:2tsup:

Your carving apparatus (on the facebook link) looks somewhat uncomfortable. Have you considered setting it lower, for use in a seated position? And/or adding an armrest? For the armrest, pvc pipe and fittings come to mind.

Cheers,
Joe

Yeah it was made for the Woodfast I had, which was considerably lower.
