Some things just can't be planned. It's just luck.

Taking part in a mallet swap and this is going to America. It has the eagle. Though others may say a bat

Just put a coat of linseed oil on. What would others suggests for a finish on a mallet. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/01/2a4e3u4e.jpg

The head has been drying out for 3 years but I'm still worries about splitting.

Dave, if it's a user then a couple more coats of linseed oil is the go, I wipe all my unpainted garden tools with it every couple of years. But if it's to be an item to be treasured and admired then I would give it a couple of coats of Minwax Antique oil, over the linseed oil, to give it a lovely shine and then waxed for a great look.

G'day Brendan.

The handle is just some merchant pine. The head is what I believe to be some kind of acacia. The tree was a street tree with purple flowers and spines on some of the branches so I am told.

I have been trying to find someone who remembers the tree and what it was but to no avail at this time. It smells fishy when you turn it.

Peter,

I will be sending it to a mate in the states and not sure if he will use or admire. The head does not soak up much at all but the handle is quite thirsty.

Finishing is something I have very little experience with and have much to learn. Thanks for the advice.
