The Acorn Sewing Tidies.

Hi All,
Having another go at this Photo thing again.
These Tidies are of 3 pieces, so you have a Bottom with hole for small Needles.
There is also a Thimble, that covers the Needles, then you have the Top Cap with Finial.
Both of these are made in Osage Orange, The Dark one has been sitting in a glass fronted cabinet, in other words, the light can get to it. Stands 3¾in./ 95mm.
The Light one was made recently, but not as good in MO.
Very hard to get them exactly right. Still it went quite well without breaking anything.
O/O goes dark over a period of time, it was made back in the '90's.
An English Woodturner, Alan Peters, made one of these for the Queen.
Made of Ebony, he put a small Band of Gold in each Piece.This Article came out in that Excellent Eng.Mag." Practical Woodworker " a bit before they Stuffed it up.301076

Well, I finally got the Photo up, but it is still wrong, as you can't Click to make it bigger so as to see it better.
I think I did a double on the Stretch & Skew.
Will just have to keep trying to get it into the Grey Matter up top.

Hi All,
Well after a bit of Drama & 's help we sorted it out.

One point I missed in saying, was, If you make something like these 2, make sure the the Cap is not a Partially tight fit. Loose is best.

Many yrs. ago I had 1 on my table, Father & Son looking, Son reaches over, almost to the back of the Table, picks up the Tidy by the Cap, just got it over the edge, & the Bottom Drops on to the Cement Floor, & broke off half of the Base, Dad said sorry, & they just kept going.
At that Stage I was doing a rather fair job in making these, & had $75 on them, so I lost that Day.
So in hind sight, watch the little Stegglers, as the Parents think it is OK for them to pick up your expensive Items & Destroy them.
On a good day they take me 4-5 Hrs to make. They are a bit dearer these days.

Actually, I never had any Dimensions, just worked it out, by the Photo in that Mag.
I'll have a go at sizing it for you.
Overall Height ; 92mm.
Cap ; 50mm. x 26mm.Thick x 35mm. Depth of hole x 1.5mm.?Cap Wall Thickness.
Finial Height ; 11mm.
Thimble ; 27.5mm. Long & 17mm. but Tapered Inside & Out to Fit a Ladies Finger. x 23mm. Deep.
You might like to have a Lady Standing there as You make the Thimble, so as to stick Her Finger in the Hole for correct Size. x 21.5mm Outside Dia.
Overall Length of Body ; 59mm. x base ;31mm. x Thickness of Body ; 32mm.
Lip where Cap sits ; 23mm. x 6mm.High.
Tapered Lip where Thimble sits ; 16mm up to 15mm. x 10mm. High.
Depth of Hole For Needles ; 35mm & using a 6mm. Drill.
This is the Sizes of the Original Dark one in the Photo.
Any timber wood do, but I found the O/O the nicest, as with the High Finish, you can see through the Grain, just like Tigers Eye.
The really really hard part is doing the Cap, so as you don't split it.
As TL says, the way to stop the Cap Slipping Off is to Chase a Thread.
Only thing is, you only have 6mm. to play with, & I know I'm not that good.
So you do the Body 1st. then the Thimble & then the Cap.
Pat, that reads as clear as mud.
Well that is the best I can do. Pity you weren't a bit Closer, then you could come & see it.

I think it wood be hard work doing it in Pine.
Try some Cotoneaster, Apple, Pear, Blackwood, etc.
