Hi Guys,
I have quite a nice light fitting that needs some TLC in the form of new lamp holders. I have sourced 3 sets of three lampholders in the expectation, from the catalogues at the wholesalers, of receiving the threaded, either brass or plastic sleeve, to attach them to the fittings. Nobody seems to know what going on!
So my question is can someone here with the appropriate gear thread me some brass or plastic, or whatever, to complete the now 4 month old "easy fixed dearest" I have set myself up for? The pieces I need will be 3/8 inch diameter, and a "tube" so the wire can go through and about 1 and 1/2 inches long. As for thread pitch I have no idea...

especially post 8 and 12.

A bit of a scrounge around a car boot sale market or a tip shop / council clean-up may produce some old light fittings or ceiling fans with these nipples.
Also, try a light fitting shop, preferably one that has been around for a long time, they may have bits and pieces in their repair section.

Looks like a standard 3/8"x26tpi brass thread fitting.... most hardware or lighting shops - even Bunnings - may have nipples and nuts for those.

Surprisingly its call threaded lamp post. If you ask for that at a lighting shop they should have it for you.

the 5 lighting shops so far I have visited have a blank look on their faces when faced with the Q. They have no parts...
I did manage to find one in 1/2 inch plastic. Even taking that in and asking for 3/8 one gets the response, "what's that used for?"

Heaven help us all in the future...I'll keep chugging away, thanks for the name heads up. Helps enormously in the online searching

Check the thread size if you can. Measure the ID. As I mentioned in the thread quoted by Alan I also had trouble with this. My new fittings had a 10mm x 1mm pitch thread. They have gone metric. I had to order the threaded tubing in this size. I still have quite a bit left and could spare a couple of inches if this is the right size. The nuts are hard to find too.

ps I went out to the shed and watching carefully for joe blakes, found and measured the tubing. It is 9.66mm diam and as stated 1mm pitch. It is fully threaded along its length.

My local lamp shop had some as that is where I purchased mine from. I'll try to swing past and see if they still stock it.

I used mine for making pillars in a rifle stock :B.

Take your fitting down to Bunnings and try it out on various sizes of bolts and establish what thread it is. I had a similar problem and discovered that the thread was 10mm. once you have that info the rest should be easy.

M10 x 1.0 is common in ceiling fans - for attaching the light fitting to the fan. Also in "coach" type outdoor lamp fittings. I purchased the taps & dies on Ebay, and make up short sections from brass on the lathe. If you are only making external (male) threads, you may not even need the dies, and you may not need the thread over the whole length.

You will only need thread at the ends, of course. My length of "Threaded Lamp Post" came fully threaded. It was originally 1 metre long. The advantage of this is that it can be cut at any point and is already threaded.

5 lighting shops? Their only purpose then, is to separate people from their money. I fully understand your worry about the future. My stepdaughter was straight on to it and knew all about it, although she had not had to order any before. She was taught a lot by me whilst growing up so I should expect that.:rolleyes:

Rang him and hooray he had 5 pieces I could have for 5 bucks. Could not get there fast enough...

I may have to get bolts that fit and drill the centre on the press...
