Small bowl/plater call it what you like I had a round of spalted beech which started at 9 1/2" X 2" and ended up 7 1/2" X 1". It was so near the point as being firewood not that wood this soft in places would be any good on the fire. Whilst turning it I had to keep applying sander sealer to help with stabilizing it.

Anyway i persevered and this was the result

Excellent. You just have to persevere with spalting don't you, simply because of the texture of the finish.
Have you tried using wood hardener instead of sanding sealer? I have found it very good for spongy wood.

Mate,
It was worth your perseverance!!! You have a lasting celebration of how nature has "hidden gems" in firewood heaps. As firewood it would have given you a small amount of reward (in heat) but turning it to reveal the patterns has made its final use a lasting momento.
