Hi guys,

I would like to know what the experts
think, especially on the finial, not to sure
on these regards proportions etc......
only small but has taken ages to get this
far with this project, with many attempts
on the finial:o,

I love the bowl,
red mallee burl is one of my favorite timbers to turn,

but as a personal preference I don't like finials so any comment I make on it wouldn't be be objective at all :D,

but it looks ok

cheers Ben

Nice one Michael. :2tsup: :2tsup: :2tsup:

It looks pretty good to me, but I'm not qualified to comment on the finial either.
I like the contrasting insert surrounding the lip.

What did you use to blacken the lid and finial?

Hi Smiife. The bowl looks great!. As does the lid. The finial is fine if you like that sort of...well, handle. I would be worried around here that one of my drunken mates might fall over and land "eye first" on it. It could be lethal. Have noticed a lot of American turners use the finial on their lids, maybe their mates are not very nice when drunk and its a cunning plan to dispatch them?
What have you finished the lid with? Or is it some really black sort of timber.

Hi ben,
Yes I like the red mallee burls too,
Not a regular "finial maker", but I thought
I would give It a crack

Hi hermit
thanks for your comments
the black finial and gold rim were just painted
with a spray can, I have used spirit stain with
some pieces I have made, but sometimes
reacts with some timbers

Hi A.B
We can hold our liquor up here mate, these days I just
go to sleep after a few beers,
Thanks for your comments, much appreciated
I think I should have maybe called It a box and
not a bowl,
It Is only small 150mm wide x 50mm high and 140 mm
with the finial (sorry "handle"):U

Thanks again to all,

Not bad i like it, but if you want an honest answer regarding shape i feel the finial could be a little better. The main/long part of the finial seems to dip a little in the middle and the tip needs a bit more shape. But im fussy when it comes to shape, im an ex trade turner.

looks good! maybe a touch thinner on the top of the finial, still a great result!

Nice wood,good box/bowl. I agree that the tip of the finial/handle could be more concave/lethal :D :2tsup: Phil303151

Great box and the colours match well, as for the finial I personally think it is a little to thick. But then I like the thinner finials like this one.

Sorry nothing under the finial I just turned this to show someone that you can produce these from a rough blank to completion just using a skew, Maybe I will make the rest to go with it.

Hi dalboy
Thanks for your comments very much appreciated
I think that Is a good finial too, but not much shape
to it ,,, I was trying to get some flow thru the whole
bowl, lid, finial contour, how can you make a finial then
the bowl/box, just seems round the wrong way to me:no:
maybe It, s just the way i do it,, but i would rather make the
base then the top to match,,,, thanks for your comments
and advise ....
Cheers smiife:2tsup:
P.s i used a skew to make mine too!!!:oo:

I had someone who was not too happy with the skew that is why I made this one just as an example, like yourself I make the hollow form/bowl first the design the finial to suit :U:U:U.

I hope my first post did not offend as that is not my intention.

Happy turning and look forward to some more well turned pieces
