View Full Version : Things you are missing on your machine, that you would like people to look out for

Hey all,

I got a message from a forum member in the UK the other day, asking if I was looking for a specific accessory for the Stenner, something he may have come across as part of his search for something for himself. I was really pleased and grateful that he had thought about me, and was willing to try and help source an item that I may need to completely restore my machine.

It got me thinking, the reality is, most machines don’t come complete, and a lot of the parts we are searching for that are missing from a machine, you aren’t going to find listed on an auction site etc. It might be as big as a fence, or as small as a bolt or locking lever, and it’s the kind of thing that makes the difference between a complete restoration, and something that looks similar, but isn’t quite right.

Now I know the forum has it’s “Market Place”, but the things I am talking about are items that most people wouldn’t know what it is, or what machine it goes on. They might be something others might see when they are collecting a machine that they could ask about, if only they knew someone needed one. Things like this need a lot of luck to find, and many eyes.

Yes you would have already bought it up in the post you did when you restored your machine, but perhaps no one could help then, and you would like to bring it up again to jog people’s memories and perhaps remind people you are still looking.

So to start off (completely unselfishly:D), here are 3 items I have been looking for, and had no luck so far:

Wadkin JTA Universal Swivel Fence:

http://i1365.photobucket.com/albums/r754/woodworkforum/discsanderfence_zpsf9206405.jpg (http://s1365.photobucket.com/user/woodworkforum/media/discsanderfence_zpsf9206405.jpg.html)

Stenner ABM quadrant

http://i1365.photobucket.com/albums/r754/woodworkforum/stennerquadrant_zpscc326ee4.jpg (http://s1365.photobucket.com/user/woodworkforum/media/stennerquadrant_zpscc326ee4.jpg.html)
(haha, you know it’s a long shot when you can’t even provide a photograph of one)

Stenner Mitre Gauge

That one I can’t even identify, and my hope is to find a mitre gauge of similar size and substance (nice big cast iron), I would be replacing the mitre bar, so one off any machine would work, just looking for a similar era and of suitable size to match the saw.

Now I realise that I haven’t picked the easiest or necessarily the cheapest items to start the ball rolling, (and I know that postage could be costly, and I would obviously expect to cover the person financially for any expense and time to assist), but with a bit of hope, and a lot of luck, someone might stumble across what I am looking for, at a time when they don’t want it for themselves.

Now tell me what you are looking for, so I can keep my eyes open

Camos, what a brilliant idea!!!
As you have said its easier to locate an article with more eyes on the lookout.
Could I add a Protractor fence guide for an SCM SI 15WF Panel Saw. As pictured it is a saw that wouldn't be out of place in a kitchen manufacturers workshop. The Protractor Fence/Guide goes on the travelling table so you can cut angles on the board. This machine, I think has had a few owners so the Accessories have gotten lost over time. Its some thing you only use occasionally but boy its handy.
This Protractor has attached to it a telescopic fence with a stop so you can cut repeatedly pieces to a pre-set length.
Thanks for taking the time to look

John,

My hope was to kind of make it a thread that everyone who wants to help, and needs help (and lets face it on this forum thats pretty much everyone:U), can have a bit of a look at every now and again, and then when they are picking up a machine, or in one of those time capsule type locations, they might see something and think, "I am sure someone was looking for one of those".

I will now have a quick glance through this post before and after I go hunting, and obviously I will ask, and if it is a give away item, I will grab it straight away, and if it is something the guy might sell, I will get an idea on price and a contact number to pass on to that forum member.

If I find something I have been looking for, I will post that I have found it, so people know I am no longer looking. I would probably recommend (if available) showing a photo of what you are looking for (as some of these items will be difficult to identify without an image, and it is probably easier for people to remember).

Anyway, not sure if it will catch on, but at this stage, I will be keeping my eye out for the items already listed. First one to find an item for another member wins a prize:lolol:

Cheers,

Camo

John

There are at least 3 versions of the handwheel - the drawing above (late), the picture (early), mine I guess dated between these (the same version as Camo's), so lots of choice! The picture of the Hyco shows a handwheel identical to that on the Walker-Turner 1959 parts list - you might source one from US. As you are in Sydney, feel free to have a look at mine in Epping. The machine is complete and works; with some trepidation, I am about to pull down for cleaning, removal of surface rust, adjust pulleys, and hopefully get back together.

Cheers

Thanks for the information Peter - I wasn't aware of the 3rd type of handwheel. Good luck with your cleanup / rebuild. My saw has been waiting for some attention now for about 2 years...(and counting). And thankyou for your kind offer to take a look at your machine. I'll keep it in mind as I (hopefully) get closer to addressing the missing bit on my saw. A good suggestion to look at the US (BOYD on OWWM) as the parts are small, plenty of WT models around, and postage shouldn't break the bank.

Thanks and regards,
John

Great idea guys! Will certainly keep an eye on this thread. I just bought a Robland K26 Combination machine, which came without fences. I obviously need some, original or new aftermarket ones would be great to know about.
Thanks in advance

So now are you going to be distracted from the True Path of Stenner Purity there Cam?:D
Or is this just going to be a temporary stop gap?

Nice to see that you've found something that might just work for you!

Haha Alli,

Firstly welcome aboard, how's the Pickles going, much progress? Well I have actually cheated and looked over on OWWM, but I thought it might encourage you to start a sister post, for any Aussie guys who don't get over to that forum:D, it is a saw worth seeing (not as good as the Stenner, obviously, but still a good patternmakers saw:p).

Alli, I have a very big advantage with the Stenner, very little documentation. This means that I can pretty much claim anything about it without anyone being able to challenge me (or if they do, it means they have to provide me with information I don't have, like a picture of the gauge or image from a catalogue, which means I win either way:U). So having seen the picture Henry has posted, I am 99% certain:wink: that this is a direct replica of the original Stenner gauge, but stand ready to be corrected, by anyone with a Stenner ABM catalogue.......anyone......please someone show me a Stenner ABM catalogue:C.

Seriously though Alli, I am very thankful to Henry for this offer, I have cast a wide net so far looking for original parts (forums and Gumtree adverts, Australia and England). It may not be original or necessary period, but it looks like a cracker mitre gauge and a good size, so I am glad Henry is considering parting with it. It really has become a matter of necessity, as the Stenner is now my main saw.

Cheers,

Camo

Hi Cam,
I think that gauge will work really well for my saw but would look totally out of place on your Stenner, I think you should really reconsider it. While you are doing so i'll look after it for you!

I managed to get a lot of the interior pulled out, not that there is much compared to your Stenner, very simple, I think it's older. I put up some more pics on the other place. Maybe I'll start a thread here as well. Would that be kosher do you think?

Just a little update on an item in my search list....

I received a PM from forum member Rob (auscab) letting me know of a lathe (complete) that had the old style tailstock handwheel I have been searching for....and I managed to snag it (the whole lathe) for a great price. Thank you Rob - I really appreciate that you sent me notification via PM, rather than via a broadcast. I have no doubt I would not have picked it up for the same money if it been posted to the ebay thread.

The lathe also has an interesting (to me at least) badge, featuring the Woodfast and Hyco logo's together. And I've never seen that before.

John,
Rob told me about that last week.
Great to see this working!
Now....does the lathe you snaged have the pin assembly on the back of the headstock that locates in the dividing wheel?
Mine came from a school where they must have removed it for safety reasons.
This is a picture of the one on Rob's (Auscab) lathe.

In my book there is nothing worse than someone offering you something, and then changing their mind. I have no problem with people not helping, but when you say you will help, you should follow through. I had no right to expect Henry to help me in my search for a mitre gauge for the Stenner, but when he offered me the Taiwanese beauty a few weeks ago I was very happy to finally have an option.Well long story short, I get a chance to visit Henry last week, and he decides he doesn't want me to have that mitre gauge any more:C................................

Thats because he found the Barker one instead:yourock2:. This is a picture of this massive thing, I have put a standard 12" cabinet saw mitre next to it, to give you guys an impression of scale.

http://i1365.photobucket.com/albums/r754/woodworkforum/3fe67cb7d2bf7fbf10c411622bee4461_zpsb669b3ff.jpg (http://s1365.photobucket.com/user/woodworkforum/media/3fe67cb7d2bf7fbf10c411622bee4461_zpsb669b3ff.jpg.html)

We spent some time going over some catalogues that he has (he really does have a great collection), before he said to me, "Come out to the workshop, I've got something for you", when he showed me the Barker mitre instead, I was really shocked, I am not often lost for words, but this was one of those occasions, and I was worried Henry may mistake it as disappointment, it really did make my day!!!

I don't have any pictures of a Stenner mitre gauge, but I imagine this would be very close to what it would have been, massive, heavy, and made to last.

Now I have no excusses, so I need to start work on making that mitre bar to match the Stenners mitre slot.

Henry, I have posted in a lot of forums and classifieds all over the world asking for help in finding a suitable mitre gauge. I was desperate enough, that Rob was even helping me look into getting a new one cast from a PK saw. You are very generous and I only hope that I can help you in the future as much as you have helped me.

Cheers,

Camo

Peter - no pin on either of my lathes I'm afraid....both have the headstocks drilled to accept the assembly, but only one of the pulleys have been drilled for indexing.

Might be worth looking on OWWM BOYD for Walker Turner parts (on which the Hyco/Woodfast is based)

A little bit of sleight of hand and you'll have that legion of Stenner owners all believing it was original.

Matt,

Ah so you didn't get an angle grinder with a sanding disc attached, like Jack was suggesting:U.

Firstly well done on your aquasition, those 30" discs are monsters!! Secondly, thank you so much for thinking about me, and what I was seeking, unfortunately I had to make some decisions and one of them was to trade off the JTA (I just couldn't justify the real estate or the need for such a large disc). Henry, who as you know is a retired pattern maker, swapped me his early JY bobbin sander and a spare table with dust extraction port for the JTA (a good swap for both of us I think, and the machine I was seeking in the first place, so I got there in the end). I also now have an Australian made L.S. Barker double disc 18" sander.

I've just jumped over to the Canadian site and seen you have posted about the JTA, looks very complete.

Cheers,

Camo

P.S. Vann, that's a bit extreme...lol.

Not sure if this is the right thread, but I have picked up a Wadkin 12AGS table saw (photo attached).

I am looking for a riving knife bracket which is one of the castings on the outside of the blade. The riving knife attaches to this casting. It looks like the top of the casting has been broken off on mine. I don't have the piece that has broken off to weld back on. This is a decent sized casting, so I think I would only be able to find one from a saw that is otherwise unusable or damaged. I have tried a place in the UK, but I am expecting a nasty price shock !

If I can locate the riving knife and blade guard I would be able to start using the saw.

I can supply a pdf of the manual if anybody needs clarification of the part I am talking about.

I realise this post is a little old, however, if you're still looking for the Hyco Scroll Saw part let me know. I have a spare Hyco that was dismantled into parts (all of it wasn't originally there).

Regards,
Raymond.

Raymond

Do you still have any scrollsaw parts available? I tried sending you a pm but it says your inbox is full.

I know this is an old thread, has anyone managed to source any index pins for a Hyco? I'm now on the hunt for one.

Cheers
Stewart

For future reference, if anyone finds a source of Woodfast indexing pins, be aware that there are a couple of sizes.
The one I have appears to be a bit bigger than the one shown earlier.

This photo is of another Woodfast pulley for comparison.

Hi all,
This thread is a great idea.
Has anyone got a sanding attachment (9") to suit a Durden Pacemaker saw. Also chasing a mitre block for same.

What size hole does the durden have to hold the sanding attachment? I was given something that might fit it and get you started? It’s a cast square plate with a post. I will photograph it tomorrow.

RonnieJ, I've just bought a NOS Triton sanding disk and fitted it to the circ saw arbor on the homeshop. Works great.
