View Full Version : Looking to swap a 2Hp single phase motor for 1.5 or 2Hp 3-phase motor

Anyone interested in changing their machine to single phase? I have a nice Australian made 2Hp single phase 2850rpm foot mount motor that I bought new around 15 years ago and used on a compressor. I updated that to 3Hp maybe 3 years ago and it's been collecting dust since then. I'll clean it up before showing it to anyone :)
I want a 1.5 or 2Hp (1440 rpm preferred) 3-phase motor for my smaller lathe to run on a VFD.

THE LIMITING FACTOR is the physical size of the motor: it cannot be more than 210mm across/diameter in at least one plane (or it won't fit inside the lathe base). Please measure rather than estimate that dimension. Foot mount preferred but not critical.

Watcha gunna use it in Joe?

I'm starting to wonder what to do with the single phase motors I've swapped out for 3 phase.

I want to use it in the small 'sandheap' CVA75 lathe. It has until now had a 1/2Hp 2880rpm single phase clutch motor. Never has been satisfactory in either spindle rpm nor power. Very easy to stall and break cutting edges.... I now have another VFD I would like to use to address both issues. If I can help it, I'd rather not add the expense of a new motor, when I have lots of 'wrong' sized or phase motors to swap :)

If it helps anyone, I also have a never used 3Hp 3-phase 1440rpm motor to swap instead.... or even a 5Hp one! More tempting for someone's upgrade?

I've got exactly what you are looking for, it's a shame you are so far away.

I've got plenty of 2 pole motors that would fit the bill. I might have a 1hp 4 pole, but it will probably be under powered.
I have been thinking of putting a vfd on the new bandsaw, but a single phase motor would be just as good, the coolant pump is 240 anyway. I'm fairly certain it is 1.5hp and small too.
I don't want to talk too soon or sign him up for something but I think Ray will be up in the next few weeks, I could send it back with him. I'll check the size tonight.

Uee, is the bandsaw motor 4 pole? I take it you want the 2Hp single phase motor for the saw in exchange then. If so, I could send that up with some friends from Canberra who are visiting after next weekend on their way through. Let me know if I understand correctly and the 'crossection' of the motor - and your decision.

You never know... My wife is actually going over to Busselton and Bunbury in May. Depending on the weight of the motor, she could be convinced to buy some extra luggage allowance and cart it across :)

Hi Joe,

Looks like you got it sorted now but I have a 3 phase motor that you may be able to use. There are only 2 problems, it's a flange mount (B5) and it's of unknown HP. It's connected to a pump as it came out of a commercial dishwasher. Anyway, I can take some measurements of it if you're interested. By the physical size, I'd have a guess that it's between 1.5 - 2HP.
