Lathe is finished plus three point steady

Gday Folks,

After much help from Sam-Q, NeilS, Paul39, Uncle Al, Old Croc, pjt, BobL, Mobyturns, and hughie, the Omega Lathe I've been restoring in these two threads, http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=177954 and http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=181500&highlight=pulleys is now finally finished.

Guys, you all have a generosity that is limitless, patience in abundance, and a willingness to help that is inspiring. Without your help over these last few months I would still have a boat anchor in the garage instead of a lathe that is everything I'd imagined it would be and for that I can't thank you enough.

Since last posting I still wasnt happy with the rev range so I sourced a step pulley from AA Bearings in Nunawading that gives me a 4 gear range of,

at 10hz the speeds are 58, 132, 245, 424 and
at 70hz the speeds are 408, 921, 1718, 2970

So realisticly I have the range that I was after and for one I dont think the lathe will spend much time at 10hz and two while the range is certainly there to do all sorts of turning I think for now I'll probably have it most of the time on the third gear, time will tell.

The lathe is painting in Hammerite Black Gloss, it was going to be white but IMHO this turned out much better.

I've been thinking about a 3 point steady for awhile and decided to make one.

All steel, secondhand skateboard wheels, had the steel already, bolts and nuts and bits cost about $20.00 and its does work well.

Specialised laptop stand is copywrited to Ross's engineering services and lathe restorations, can allow the design to be reused but at great cost to the management :;

Some of us are not as patient as you about cleaning up older machinery.

First photo is of my new to me, used and neglected Woodfast one hour after I brought it home in pieces, with no room in the shed to keep it. Second is in place, inside.

I ran an extension cord out in the yard and made a bowl. It has since had all the bare metal polished; and the stuck face plate, tail, and drive centers knocked loose, polished and oiled.

Gday folks,

a quick update and a couple of pics, one especially for Paul.
The ply feet weren't all they were cracked up to be so they have been replaced by 3 pieces of 150mmx75mm U channel that are 900mm long, one on the tail end and two on the head end, all mounted to the brackets that are welded to each end of the lathe. 309907

I started roughing a bowl after putting the new feet on, big improvement and the whole set up feels really solid.

Very nice. Next order of business is to get a stripe of Danish Oil up the wall behind the lathe that has been slung off the bowl being finished.:D:D:D

A piece of cardboard keeps it off the lathe bed.
