Hi guys,
I started some spiral candle sticks on the weekend and
thought it might be interesting to do a WIP.....
on my progress, I had a nice piece of red gum
cut in half and started shaping and marking out
the lines to cut out the spirals, that was all I had time
for on sunday afternoon, hope some of you find it
interesting,
Cheers smiife:2tsup:
P.s.things are looking up the photos are the right way up:o

I'm in. Always wondered how to do spirals.

I've managed it in the past with a massive catch with a skew. And I mean massive. ;))

The trick here will be to get the ensuing spiral to match the other one.

The trick here will be to get the ensuing spiral to match the other one.

What is required here is a controlled dig in.

Mine come in 3 sizes.

1: Standard dig in. Also called a "woopsie".

2: Medium dig in. Switch of lathe and count fingers.

3: Massive dig in. S**t!! Where did that go? Time for a change of clothes.

Cheers

Click on the line that says, "Hollow Spiral Candles Holders".

Here is the one I made. It is around 8" (203 mm) tall.

If you need any help Smiffy then give me a yell. I've done several now and they are 'interesting'!

Would yo believe hat right hand thread ones are more difficult than left hand thread ones :C . That's for real too and it's because when you drill out the spiral the drill is going with the grain on the left hand jobbie and against it with the right one! Not much more difficult, but a little bit.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f180/Jonzjob/Spiralplus.jpg (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/Jonzjob/media/Spiralplus.jpg.html)

Good fun if you go both ways ducky :D

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f180/Jonzjob/1Candlestick7.jpg (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/Jonzjob/media/1Candlestick7.jpg.html)

I did some egg cus too for a comp in a U.K. forum. The only mention they got was that they would be too difficult to clean. That wasn't mentioned in the brief..

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f180/Jonzjob/1Eggcup11.jpg (http://s47.photobucket.com/user/Jonzjob/media/1Eggcup11.jpg.html)

I forgot to say that I drilled the holes with a Forstner bit, but make sure you don't use too bigger one. It looks OK until you come to do the the next and you will finish up with the spiral much too thin by the time it's samded down. To start the sanding and get most of the rough stuff out of the way I used a sanding drum in my Dremel and to get the spirals round a strip of abrasive gripped with 2 artery forceps, the locking kind. Otherwise I would not have had any finger prints or skin on my fingers at all!

Hi guys,
Sorry to keep you all waiting so long:o
Saturday went by quickly no turning done,,,,, not happy:~

But i got a couple of hours today and did finish one
Told you i was a slow turner:U
Firstly once the spiral has been marked out just
follow the lines with a 15mm forstner bit in the
drill press with a V block clamped to the drill table
as in the photo

Next sanding, sanding, sanding and then more sanding!!!

Can't recall its correct name, but effectively its a mini belt sander. The belt was about 13mm wide on the one I had before I retired - Bummer I sold it with the factory and tools!

Well, I think you are correct, that must be his secret, which doesn't do me any good in my shop. I don't have the compressor nor the fancy little sander. :( A thin rasp helps, but still lots of finish sanding required.

I made one that included a wheel like a capstan that you turn the chuck by hand and use a 1/2 round carving gouge to carve the wood out and it's bleedin hard work :oo::oo:

It went in the bin marked maybe-next-time!

Hi guys,
I did give you all a little snipit of the secret weapon,
as some have already said bottom right hand corner:U
It, s a power file and does work by compressed air
10mm wide and just sits in between the spirals perfectly
It was a gift a couple of years ago after a few well aimed
hints:U i think it came from a power tool company
i can, t remember the name !!
All my secrets are out now!!:o

You can get an electric sander like that from alltools and the sandpaper from bunnings, we used them in the caravan industry when I was working there a while back

Do you drill a hole down the centre first from one end or only the ones to form the spiral?

The ones for the spiral form the hole in the middle
If you go thru far enough, a forstner bit is best to use

I got a pair done in a new thread, had to use a spade bit as that was the best I had.

Forstner bit on order now.

Thanks for the inspiration, has been an interesting week since I saw this thread
