One often sees articles in woodwork mags and on T.V., particularly those from pommy land, where they refer to box-wood. What variety of timber is this?

Don't know the variety but can tell you it is nothing like any of the Australian box.
It is available here through specialist timber merchants but only in small pieces. It is usually sold in the log, which is maybe 1.5mt long and only about 90mm diam max. (usually much smaller) It is used extensively for making musical instruments, especially the woodwind type (recorders, etc). It is a brilliant timber for turning and holds fine detail very well. It is relatively expensive but well worth every penny you spend on it, especialy if you are turning miniatures.
It is also possible that some of the references are to Box Alder which is sometimes available here, also through specialty timber suppliers.
