The last time I was over at Greg Ward's I noticed this weathered burl slice. He'd been using it to weight down the tarp in the carport
I paid the asking price, and it followed me home
Greg wasn't sure whether it was Red Gum or Jarrah

today while sanding some other timbers I decided it was time to see what was hidden under the greying

The end result

and now with a bit of moisture to show the colour

Now to come up with a suitable project :D

Nick.........
Just to prove that old grey burl slices are worth the price of a sanding.
Came up a treat for something that looked like firewood.
I'll have to bring some more down to hold down the tarp ready for your next call

I am interested in getting some burl and cutting it into laminates.

What are you blokes using to fill the defects in the burl? My guess is epoxy or fibreglass resin with perhaps some colour added.

I have used fibreglass resin to fill large dings when refurbishing furniture. Once sanded smooth and lacquered, they are all but invisible. Is this the way to go with the burl?

Cheerio!

John

with turning I use an epoxy and coffee grounds mix
comes out really dark brown or black

I'll probably do similar with this - when I get around to using it

Can anyone give me reasons why fibreglass resin should not be used to fill defects instead of epoxy?

It goes off faster, and the stuff I use is crystal clear.

I have epoxy, don't have fibreglass resin

Fibreglass resin is Ok if coloured, but it isn't crystal clear and goes slowly more yellow with age and eventually opaque, so no good where clear casting is called for.
