Will it work?

I am going to make a jig and a table to surface plane some large and wide slabs. For the purpose I have a big Triton router. I want to get a 2 1/2 inch magnate surface planing bit. Can anybody foresee and issues with this?

The TRA should have enough grunt to run the bit, but remember that for a big bit you need to slow the motor to keep the bit tip speed in the safe zone. I am guessing 12-14,000RPM but haven't looked up a chart to confirm. The bit will probably come with a suggested operating speed. Too fast and you will overload the router and overheat the bit, reducing the quality of the cut and the life expectancy of the bit. Looking at the carbide in them in the pics, there seems to be plenty of material to braze to to attach the cutter, so they shouldn't be prone to wanting to shed carbide if used sensibly.

I have used it with larger pieces of timber than shown in the above link but the biggest bit I used was 38 mm, 2.5" should be fine with as Malb says and appropriate speed reduction

Thank you gentlemen. I have never used such a big bit outside of a router table. I have used much bigger panel bits but I just wanted some reassurance that my plan was not madness. I am going to make a new camphor laurel kitchen from some rough slabs and I want the biggest bit I can safely use. The triton can be attached to either a shop vac or a dust extractor so perhaps the dust will not kill me. Anyway trying to sort it out will be fun. I have a big triton router in my router table and I am getting another one for this job. They can be had for about $335 from a company called The Discount Trader. A lot cheaper than some other places. Bobl has an impressive design.
