Very nice work. :2tsup: The detail under the step stringers adds a nice touch to your turnings. That bottom newel is very imposing in a grand manner.

I have done a few jobs for a solid stair builder and don't really get to see the end result either. Good to see you getting this sort of work as it is very difficult to be competitive against commercial copy lathe products. It was not quite as precise in the detail but still a pretty good standard. We worked out my mate could purchase finished product marginally above the cost of the raw material he supplied to me for turning. :? So we even considered hand refinishing commercial products but unfortunately by the time it got to us there was far too much inconsistency in how the product moved after turning, and in transport / storage. Good hand turned product will always be a superior product but of course comes at a premium but few builders & clients will pay the premium.

The customer had a photo of the bal's and I had to turn a sample and seeing there was 2 staircases in this house the boss went to see about auto turning bal's and when they saw detail the auto Lathe couldn't do it or to expensive which made me laugh!
there is alot of man hours in a job like this all the brackets under the treads are done by hand, but these jobs are few and far between!

I am going to guess a little here but I think you are feeling very good at the moment.

I am basing this on my personal experience as I get a very good high feeling when something I made is being used. Does not matter what it is just that it is being used.

I am no way going to be able produce consistent items with such accuracy as the professional turners(mainly due to my procrastinationary turning ability) but do admire the items that are being created.

I really do thank you for sharing this photo and it is from this thread that people(in the future) will see what can be created by a person with his lathe and turing chisel, instead of using a commercial copy lathe. :2tsup:

Thankyou! I do get a touch excited when handed paperwork but once I get to 50 bals I keep looking for the last one as its all about getting it done!I do hope the customers enjoy the look of the job and wonder if other people appreciate the work that has gone into it. When in Sydney I love going to the strand arcade and looking at all work in that place and wonder what sort of lathe was used!
There is more variety at this place and only turn bals, posts when needed not day in day out and smaller furniture components.
All bowl / craft turning happens at home at a more leisurely pace!

Hi chuckie ,
It must be very satisfying to see the job

if the owners appreciate all the work that
has gone in to them...........i hope so!
