I was in a hardware recently and I saw some "Cedar". Being from WA originally I don't have much experience with Australian cedar and I am sure the stuff in the shop was from the States. Is there an easy way to tell the difference?

Thanks

ASK! If it's in a hardware shop you can pretty well say it aint Aussie Cedar, most likely Western Red.

If it is pink to a deep reddish brown colour with open pours and a pretty bland grain it is Australian Cedar. If it is machined and golden brown to redish brown with a distinct grain patern like pine, and it is spounge soft it is Western Red. Or something like that.

But the easiest way by far is to ask. http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/confused.gif Any self respecting timber yarder will know and be glad to tell. I guarantee you won't be made to feel a fool.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Neil,

The main reason I was asking was for situations where I was rumaging around at the tip or out the front of people's houses on council clean up days. I have found good piles of some hardwoods from these places and occasionally there are bits of cedar or other things.
