What would you expect to pay for a 50mm titan firmer with a non original handle? Pictures will come tomorrow and the guessing will begin!!!!!! Damien.

What would you expect to pay for a 50mm titan firmer with a non original handle?

As is pictured Titan 101, 50mm Registered chisel with plain sides (not a firmer) fitted with bum handle, unknown patina and slightly shortened I would expect:-

(A) From ebay or the like - $85 to $110 plus postage
(B) From and antique centre - $80 to $90
(C) From tool dealer at the markets - $80 to $100
(D) From HTPAA or TTG sale - $55 to $75
(E) From Swap meet - $40 to $70
(F) From Mom and Pop stall at a Market - $10 to $20
(G) From School fete - $2 to $5
(H) From Garage sale - $1 to $5
(I) From Tip shop - $1 to $3
(J) From scrap yard - "You can have it mate!!

There can be big geographical differences between States (North, South and East West) and between city and country sources and with job lots or a single.

In the case of E (maybe), F, G, H, I and J they will usually not know what it is.

Irrespective of the price you pay, these are rarer than say a 25mm 101 but not "particularly" rare as there is nearly aways one (or two) on ebay and the same at larger markets (Wantirna) and at HTPAA/TTG sales. If you want rare try turning up a 1 3/4 (44mm) ANYTHING let alone a Titan. OR, even a good (with decal) right sized handle for the above tool. Then you pay money.

NOTE TO SELF - I would love other views on this. I would hate to be uncontested in my assumptions!!

Doggie, I also came across a BUck Brothers chisel 38mm wide 96mm blade length and is of the socket variety. I know these are American but that's about it. Anything special here? Damien.

Nice! The decal and style match the "Titan Australia" blade mark but that one pictured won't fit a 50mm blade goodwoody. You need a big muthu for the big fella.

Beaut chisel and like you said very American and somewhat special if in good nick (clean, decent length and good -decalled handle. Seen some magnificent Buck boxed sets which cost a bomb and look great from US dealers. Don't know anything about them specifically except their stellar reputation and not usually found in great numbers here. Then again I'm a Titan guy and only really focus on Titans. However, I often see American chisels in my travels such as P,S&W?, Greenlee, Keen Kutter, the afore mentioned Buck Bros and many others which I often pick up at the right price because they look great in the rack (LGITR). Suspect they are not really recognised much in Oz as we tend to be European oriented (mostly UK) due to our immigrant past. Because of that you can very often pick them up very cheaply. Thin on the ground though, only present as singles usually. Probably available now as the older expatriates give up their sheds sadly. Don't know whether they sold in great numbers post war here like Bergs, Marples, Mathieson's or Wards, Suspect not. A lot of them might have turned up with Macarthur's troops in the early forties?? Someone will know!

Hope I'm not being smart alec, but I think they wood be in Imperial not Metric.
So I think it wood be a 2in. rather than 50mm.
I picked up a similar Chisel with the original handle for $4 at our local market. It is a Holly, & nobody knows anything about it at all.
Just went & had a look, but I found my 2in.Titan, & it also has the original handle. I think I paid $4 as well.
Was really good tool markets here but has died off.
I will have to check on the " Holly " in daytime, just to make sure I'm not telling stinkies.
