Hi all,

I'm looking for a supplier for Hornbeam. Its a hardwood, light in color, and reputed to machine really well.

If you know of a supplier could you please let me know?

,
I purchased alot of the Meribu Kwila from you during your garage sale. Would you happen to have any Meribu Kwila posts?

I need to cut from a 3" x 5.5" post. I can glue 3x3s if you have them.

Gooday.

Unfortunately I have no Merbau (aka Kwila) left.

Bayswood Timber in Hallam is where I used to buy from.

Hope this helps.

Hi and all,
I spoke to both Mathews and Adams yesterday.

Mathews: 4x4 Merbau posts - $23 meter

Adams: Ring Mathews - we sell timber for joiners - thats a specialists wood
????

Went to Mathews and picked up a 4 meter post and asked them to cut it down.
And when they did they used a chain saw.
The saw dust was amazingly yellow.
Bright yellow with a hint of orange.
I paniced because the Merbau I have is brown all the way thru and red when oiled.
I started asking about age and KD.
He told me it wan't KD and should use a non-KD wood like this for outdoor furniture.
He also told me it was definitely aged.

I need to make 2 - 3" x 5.25" posts for another Lutiens Bench I'm building.

I'm worried that the wood is still young and wet and will twist while drying and ruin my project.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Nice looking bench Barry.

This might be of some interest:
Kwila starts of yellow and goes brown. The better stuff stays brown and is hard to tell from blackwood. The rest tends to go more into the red colours.

Most has a yellow fleck in the pores. When turned the dust will react to your sweat and will often turn your skin black. When washed off with a soap like velvet laundry soap the water will take on a bright green colour.

We have had spinners get these shavings, soak them in soapy water and then dye their wool with it. The result was a pastel shade of green similar to faded army greens (uniform) but much lighter.

I have never tried it but would say that it would dye to beautifully deep brown colour with potassium bichromate (chemical dye) as it appears to have a very high tannin content.

Just a bit of useless information.

Mate. I have bought furniture grade selects from Mathews for quite some time. Bottom line is... they know there product. We have the capacity to select exactly what we want.
I've not been disapointed with them although, i do spend a bit of time selecting my pieces.

Roger,
Thanks heaps for the Reassurance.

One the day it way raining and the posts were aged and discolored.

As I've just just started getting into the different timbers your advise and first hand knowledge would be appreciated.

Would you mind posting how you decide on /select your timber and what to look for.
