Hello all you wonderful people. I am so excited! I owe you a vote of thanks for all the support when I was looking for the lathe to make lace bobbins. It works so sweetly I may even get hooked.

My husband gave me a half hour lesson last week and loads of cautious "do not work the lathe if I am not here" type of advice but I am a woman and ....

Yesterday, while he was at work I did use it :)

Now I know why he told me not to. He did not want to share the fun! To see my first effort still on the lathe go to www.brandis.com.au/craft/lace/june2005.html (http://www.brandis.com.au/craft/lace/june2005.html)

Please remember this is the second time I have used a lathe so be gentle.

Nice work for a mu. sorry, beginner. May I suggest that you start out with smaller stock, that way you dont have to turn down so much(chisels stay sharp longer) and you get more bobbins out of your stock.
Keep it up. :D

I will, but am waiting on the 16mm spur drive to hold the smaller blanks. I have a box of 100 little bits just waiting for this drive to get here. Allowing for distance the drive will be here next Wed-Frid at the earliest.

Jenny,

It's always great to see novice turners posting pictures of their work. We all started somewhere, and most won't show you their first efforts. Most will start with simple bowls, or pens. You just jumped right in. Way to go!!

No matter how hooked you get in turning (and you will!) always keep your first piece. It's good to be able to look back and see where it all started. (I gave my first piece away as a present, and always wish I'd kept it - nothing compares to your first ever success on the lathe).

You can be justifiably proud of your efforts. Well done!!!

Ian

Jenny. CONGRATULATION

What really matters is what you felt while you were making your bobbin and the joy you had when finally you held, touched, rotated, caressed the finished piece.<O:p</O:p

I’m afraid you will have got the virus.<O:p</O:p

Welcome to the contaminated group. :) <O:p</O:p

Great to see you enjoy making it, much better than buying some.

Please excuse my ignorance but what purpose does a lace bobbin serve, is it just to wind and store lace on?

Harry (and others) Bobbin lace is lace made the very old fashioned way with thread wound around sticks (bobbins) and woven to form the lace.

If you look at www.brandis.com.au/craft/lace.html (http://www.brandis.com.au/craft/lace.html) you will see my efforts at learning this craft. I even had a go a whittling! But that was before the lathe :)

All those pretty frilly things your ladies like - they usually have machine made lace on them, the hand made bobbin lace takes hours to achieve so I do it for the enjoyment as to charge an hourly rate would be ..... wow!

Great lace Jenny. Partic. April '05.

Will have to hide your site from the missus otherwise I know what I'll be turning for the next umpteen weekends! She's into cross-stitch at the moment.

Congratulations Jenny and welcome as a woodturner! Very nice work! I'm really happy that you enjoyed the turning journey so much and offcourse that the end product turned out really good. I'm not offering advise at the moment, savour the achievement. The bobin looks really good. I'm sure you'll be super hooked to turning soon and maybe you'll be making lace because you love turning bobins!

I hope you got a 3/8" spur drive as it will be ideal for what you are doing. Please keep the pictures coming, but mostly enjoy, enjoy and then enjoy more! :D

Hi Jenny,
You will do better buying a small scroll chuck as it will hold the bobbin blank more firmly than a spur (thats just my opinion) .I have made quiet a few bobbins for my wife . Very nice effort for your first try I can't show you mine as they were all in small pieces.

Regards,
Hambone

24 bobbins later with only 3 duds. Not too bad even if I do say so.
LOVE working the kingwood - it is like watching shaved chocolate. LOVE the look of Indian Ebony. Can you tell I got some bobbin blanks? Now I just need more hours in the day :)

Now I know why he told me not to. He did not want to share the fun! ....That is the only reason. Now you have the virus too, I guess you will abandon the lace and keep on doing bobins and more.

Good work! Hardly trust you when you say it's your second time. ;)
