I really enjoy my time in the workshop. I had a 6" magnifying glass in a chrome ring frame and couldn't decide just what to do with it. After a lot of thought I decided that it would look nice on an oak mount that swivelled and this is the result

Made from an old English oak TV cabinet given to me by a friend wot got a haunted fish tank far too big for it.

Now for a ladies dressing table mirror in a similar style as a pressie for my d-in-law I hope :C

Nicely done!

The swivels are just wooden pins?

Ta Skew. Yes they are 8mm pins and a slight interference fit and not glued.

The small 'saddles' just reenforce the rim as it isn't very thick.

I got the idea from what I call my 'moon ball', entered into a UK forum some while back. One of them is in Aussy now with my sister in Lawrence, NSW. Awkward to get it right but not difficult with care. Mounted on a screw chuck with the hole in the middle of the blank.

Then when the outside is finished on to a second hole offset about 3/4" and the inner surface turned down till it's held by about 1/8". Sawn off om my band saw and sanded on my Carol drum sander. Drilling the holes for the mount is tricky to get them aligned correctly!

Great job on the mirror. I did have to search for your Moon Ball in the competition. Out of the two I must admit that I like the Moon Ball better

I have to agree with you Dalboy, I too like the moonball better, but when you have a 6" magnifying glass sat in a chrome ring doing nothing and you want to show it ???

About 20 odd years back I was taliking to a friend about an old Naval telescope final lens he had, about 120 years old, and he said that he had always wanted to display it and I offered to set it for him. At the time I had no ideas and had to look at it along with what I had. I had some English elm and decided that I could make a stand for it from one piece of that elm and this was the outcome. Sorry about the photo quatility

If I had had the confidence then that I have now it would have been better?

Just noticed.. The original photos in this post are of a 6" magnifying lens and not a mirror. The mirror is nearly finished and I hope will be good? :?

I forgot to say that the old Naval lens was also 6" diameter. I pity the poor sod wot had to hold that up for hours on end in the hope of spotting Lord Nelsons singnals? Well, at that size perhaps he could see back in time???:C:C

I agree it is far better to have made something unique from something that is a standard item.
