I've just finished a box made from wood which was sold to me as Chestnut. I found it a beautiful timber in all respects - easy to work, but with a beautiful grain & polished well.

Can anyone tell me about this timber - where does it come from, habit, other uses? I like to include info like this with my boxes.

TIA

Argh, this timber is unique! If you sneak up quietly you may catch Chipmunks running all around it causing mischief http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/biggrin.gif And talking really really fast.

Don't take any notice of Shane, he got his LP's on the wrong speed again. It actually comes from chestnut trees!
Habits?? It grows and sheds nuts once a year and falls over in storms.
Other uses?? Generating large amouts of cash for anyone who has one for sale.
God, is everyone insane this weekend http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/tongue.gif

http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/smile.gifI don't know where your chestnut came from, but it is a rare spicies in the midwest section of the USA. It seems most were killed by disease some years back, since then it has become quiet scarce and expensive. Like you said its works really well w/power and hand tools alike, has a nice pattern and makes beautiful furniture. Relish it. http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/biggrin.gif

I've been asked to post some pics of these boxes, so here they are.

You must be proud of that.
Is this a record for time between posts on a thread

Possibly so, Clint, I had to go searching for it when asked about the boxes. I still have a small piece of veneer - musst do something with it.
The large box was made as a 50th birthday gift for a dear friend. This year, her husband commissioned me to make another box for her 60th.

Hi AlexS ,nice work,it seems that the darker color in chestnut wood
comes with age , as am looking at some of this wood ,
for better color and grain the tree wants to be some were in the 25 years old ,
thanks for posting , as soon as i cut some of the better logs i will post some pics.
Cheers Ralph.

I love those boxes :2tsup:
Chestnut is a very common timber in asia and is fast becoming a popular timber for furniture the world over.
We have a bedroom suite in chestnut.
I also milled some of a tree a friend cut down several years ago and have made speaker enclosures from it.
It is very nice wood to work with. A little like oak but with a coarser pattern.
