turning wood from inherited wood pile - bloodwood

after seeing a very nice piece from Ted turned from bloodwood, I decided I needed to rescue a piece from the woodpile which was left for me. Apart from the fact that it had mold on the outside (even after I removed the bark) and a hole which I did not know about when I cut it up, I am rather pleased with it. I think the shape is not bad and I do not mind the thick rim. With the big hole through it, I was not game to take it any thinner. Inside the bowl there are a few parts where I could just not get it nicely smooth with the tools. This was mainly just past the hole. Perhaps I should have left it and had a further go on another day but I wanted to see how it 'turned' out and there is some more bloodwood around! One day I might even learn to be patient :). Sanded to 600 then EEE and finished with u-beaut Glow. It is approx 17cm wide and 6cm deep with a 2.5mm rim.

I'm glad I inspired you to give the bloodwood a go.A different colour again from the bloodwood I've been turning.
I think it would have looked better if you had used an oil finish.When you have hairline cracks and flaws in the wood ,wax will tend to stick in there.I may be wrong,but thats what looks to have happened here.Also I would like to see a smaller ,better defined base to raise the body of the bowl up a bit.
Just my thoughts.

much appreciated. I have two other blanks cut so will definitely try the next with Danish Oil (as that is the only oil I have). SWMBO 'phooied' your base idea :D but taking a good look it is a bit chunky and I definitely have a lot to learn about form and shape (as well as everything else) so am always happy with feedback. I recently purchased Richard Raffan's 'Art of Turned Bowls' book and it is a real eye opener with lots of excellent ideas.
