hi,

i turned up a gear lever extension for a mate's mate today and i really needed a small diam live centre or a half dead centre.

for awhile i used a small dead centre which didn't really work all that well (because it really wasn't a dead centre just a piece of material that had been turned to 60 degrees and i stuck in the drill chuck which got me thinking).

i reckon you could make something up for small jobs. i'm thinking something that's two pieces, with a bearings pressed onto a shaft that fits into your drill chuck. i'll try and draw something next week and maybe make a prototype (or a waste a heap of stuff for the fun of it).

does anyone know of plans or an existing item already out there?

Ben.

ps, my keypad is missing a few buttons due to the kids so capitals are kaput.

Ben, I bought one of these (well - similar to) in a moment of weakness -

Does the trick for occasional use.

Hi Ben,
Do you want a small center so the tool does not foul on it?

You can get DCMT or even VCMT inserts and related holders that are much sharper diamonds than CCMT. These allow clearance from the live center so you can cut right down to (nearly) the size of the center drill hole.

I have seen small live centers commercially, i'm sure you could make one though.

Me too.. ended up with one. It is currently my "go to" center. I have not determined but have a suspicion that the interchangeable center points have an MT0 taper?

I have had one of them for about 30 years, brilliant for small work. I also made a larger cone nose to fit over it for pipe work.
