This is the latest grinder design from my workshop. Redgum and Gumnuts cast in epoxy resin. I use the Crushgrind mechanisms. Finished with 3 coats of diluted NC lacquer. C&C welcomed.

Nice one Brendan.Saves on resin too.
Do you make any attempt to seal the cut surface of the gumnuts before you apply your finish?

Looks great Brendan. Was the shape of the resin section cut out or dictated by a fault in the timber?

The gumnuts embedded in the resin certainly creates a special effect and makes it your signature work.

I would like to give it a go, but worried about health effects and allergy to the chemicals and sanding dust.

How do you stop the resin from sticking to the mould when you are casting it in place?

I made two, so I had one long blank that I then cut in half along a curved line.

From my research the dust from the resin, because it is inert, is no more harmful than the dust from timber. I protect myself from both.

The resin sticking to the mould... have a look at my YouTube video; all is explained there.

No, I just spray the lot with the lacquer. That seals it all well enough.

No, I finish it in the same way I do wood; ie sand to 500 grit and then spray lacquer.

I like the idea of an off center piece of wood, also easier to match the grain.
